Klaus vetoes Czech approval of Lisbon Treaty

It's not a veto, he has no power of veto. All he's doing is delaying signing until after the second Irish referendum. More here. It's not the unbreakable obstacle that you'd love to believe.

Edit to add: I'm actually not sure that he doesn't have power of veto. I think what happens is that if he refuses to sign once treaties are approved by the two houses, it can be referred to the Czech constitutional court to complete the ratification.

Vaclav Klaus the Czech President said he would not ratify the Lisbon Treaty after it was approved by the senate yesterday, raising a new obstacle to plans to reform the EU.

He explained that he would not sign the treaty because of its rejection by Irish voters last year and an expected court challenge in the Czech Republic.

    Good on him :)

Ah yes - Czech ratification held up by one man. Democracy in action.

most eu countries denied a right to voice their oppinions on ratifying how europe works

democracy in action - and dont give me the ''they voted them in - they speak for the population'' because no one agrees fully with whatever party or canditate they vote for

    Indeed scoflaw
Might I draw your attention to the fact that if referenda were held accross Europe it is certain that both the UK and France would have voted no.
    Democracy in action indeed.

I vote in Ireland, on what I think is best for Irish interests. I'm not sure why people feel they should vote on behalf of British or French interests.

I don't, however as this thread is about the Czech Presidents actions, I felt it appropriate to mention other countries.

So, why should Vaclav Klaus act on behalf of the French or British either? And if he's not acting on their behalf, and he's not acting on behalf of the Czechs, who all polls show as wanting the Treaty ratified, then on whose behalf is he acting? The only realistic answer is that he is engaging in political grandstanding on his own behalf - thus, one man holds up his entire country's ratification, and is warmly applauded for doing so by the eurosceptical "friends of democracy".

Would it be too cynical to say that we may expect to see Klaus on the same speaking circuits as Walesa in the future?

    cynically,

Indeed it appears 64% of Czech people are in favour of Lisbon. So as you suggest perhaps it is grandstanding.
Maybe he's gong to stand for Libertas?

On a side issue is Ganley likely to get elected?

I'm afraid I long ago gave up trying to predict the outcomes of elections. I don't gamble, and that's the only way of getting something out of such a prediction (apart from the opportunity to be publicly wrong, obviously).

I don't think so. Libertas seems a little secretive for me. I don't know enough about their funding or who's really behind it. It also seems quite difficult to find this out. So if anyone knows some links would be appreciated.

Very few people know that much about them really. I got some rubbish from Caroline Simmons in the door over the weekend. Read it out of interest and spent the first half laughing at how amazingly irrelevant most of her points are and the second half shaking my head in utter disbelief at how, well, amazingly irrelevant her points are. She/they obviously either haven't the first notion how the EU works or, most likely, are using the common Irish persons ignorance of the EU to their own ends. Surprising eh!?

ill give them a grilling if the come to my door, so far all the leaflets and posters leave me in disbelief as to how disconnected from reality they are

Liberats spit out lies, lies and more lies, and its easy to spot that they are lying as theres just so many contradictions

and of course theres the whole wheres the money coming from issue...

he managed to buy public opinion thru lies and deceit a year ago, who knows what will happen this time
