Help ... me Beemers sick

Went out this morning and got about 500 yards before hitting traffic. I sat there for a few minutes and the engine started to "behave erratically" It's a 2000 323Ci Auto and generally idles at about 700 rpm. This morning it went between 700 and 300 and up and down and in between. I'd noticed over the last week or so that it was a bit "lazy" getting going in the morning, but as soon as I took off it was grand. And after sitting all day, it was the same on starting but again, was fine once driven.

    Here are some symptoms.

Idling speed drops and raises erratically between 300 and 700 rpm whether in Neutral or Drive.
When in Drive and being driven the engine labours then revs up and drops off again, and revs again etc.
There's a slight "whoosh" sound I never noticed before (I usually have the radio on) on the first touch of the throttle and goes away as I press down. Come off the throttle completely and press again and the "whoosh" repeats. It's just for a second.

Anyone have any ideas? I'd be curious to have some idea what it might be before I drop it in.

    Thanks

At a guess, it sounds as though it might be the MAF. You'd really need to have it looked at, though. Are you anywhere near AC Cars?

Beemers are notorious for air mass meters giving trouble. And your problem sounds a lot like this. Not sure how much the new MAF would be but the labour will be next to nothing, only takes 10mins to fit.

I have a 2000 318 myself and have had this exact problem. It could be a few different things. The best thing to do would be bring it to a BMW specialist like AC Cars.

    1. It could be the Mass Airflow Meter as described above, really simple to replace & you can pick them up on ebay for bout 40e

    2. Your idle control valve could be dirty/clogged, you shouldn't need to relace it, just clean it, but it can be awkward to get at. Check out the write ups on diy cleaning on http://forums.bimmerforums.com/ for more details.

3.Or it could be faulty Lambda (O2) Sensors, if this is the case usually your engine warning light will be on. Again simple enough to replace, but a little more expensive.

Good luck... If ya find out exactly which one it is let us know.
