We all know we should do it, but how many of us actually backup our data regularly?

I have a few hard drive in my PC so I keep data separated. Some stuff like photos etc I have burned on to DVD but I'd still loose a lot if my disk died.

Do you back up as much as you should?

Not as much as I should. I backup my phone more than my pc :)

My machine at home is RAID 5, so it's unlikely that I'll have two disks fail at the same time and I lose everything. Although if the house burned down, I'd lose everything.

In fairness there are not mamy people who have offsite backups and would be ok if there was a fire!

Have an external drive I keep in the office drawer that I bring home most Friday's (sometimes the memory isn't the best as I race out the door) and I'll run a backup over the weekend. Not hi-tech but does the job. :)

Dropbox backs up all my documents and college work etc (under 2 gigs).

Have a separate 500gig (Backup) drive for Photos, Music etc...
Don't use any fancy software. Just copy and paste when ever
    I need to.

It's amazing how many companies don't have a backup routine.
Online backup is obviously the best solution but in most cases an external hard drive with scheduled back ups is the most economical.

Guys if you only have a small amount to backup, and you want it done automatically, syncing of folders etc - which service is best?

I've a 250gb usb hd for backing up my laptop regularly.

Backing up the whole disk is dead handy with the complete pc backup (or what ever ms call it) in vista business/ultimate.

There is also a 1tb external that has complete backups (every 2 months or so) of my laptop, old video footage that has been transferred to dvds, and all other pc's in the house left in my dads office.
Although, that is becoming a bit of a pain, and I might try to find a nice water/damp proof case for the hd and just leave it in the shed (which would be off site enough in even of a fire).

Any ideas for a storage container?

Until this week, I've never backed up anything except my music. But I'm going to move over to Windows 7 so I'm backing everything up :) No doubt I'll forget to do it in a months time!

Time Machine really makes backing-up so easy. For anyone on a Mac there's no excuse for not having a back-up anymore.

I also store my photos on a 2nd computer and on a remote computer (in case of the house burning down or whatever). My wifes aunts house burned down and her photos were one of the things I heard she missed most.

what happens if the RAID controller dies

best to either use the defaults or write the settings down on the pc in indelible something

I think people that are relying on RAID 5 for their backup, that RAID isn't a back-up! It's a method of defending against hardware failure, but it can't protect you against something like accidentally deleting a file, or a critical system file getting corrupt etc.

Yes but not as often as I should. I have a 1tb drive but currently its not plugged in until I get a USB hub. I have not backed up on to it in months.
