On a couple of my games which were working fine the other day. When I load them Fifa 09 for example the main screen comes up fine but when I hit enter it says it cannot read disk. No noticable scratches on disk etc this also happened with game I tried which was working fine the other day too.
Could this be a Wii problem?

Are there smudges? I know you said there are no scratches but sometimes my kids greasy fingers makes discs unreadable. Advice I found was:

    * Use a soft, slightly damp cotton cloth (use water only). Clean the disc from center towards the edges; do not use a circular motion. DO NOT use paper.

    * Make sure the game is dry, then re-insert it and see if the error occurs again.

    * If the game had been working normally, shows signs of physical damage, and now displays errors or lockups in areas it previously didn't, the problem is likely to be the damage to the disc. Use the disc replacement policy to determine how to get your game replaced.

    * If the game never worked or you are discovering errors in areas you have entered for the first time, it is possible that the problem could be with the system or the disc. (The system may still be the problem even if the disc shows some signs of damage.)

Sounds like your Wii's dvd drive laser is biting the dust. The drives are very poorly made.

Is this happening with Super Smash Bros Brawl? and also check if Fifa is a DVD9 game? DVD9's are harder to read and is a good dign your wii is on the way out. Time to contact nintendo and get consumer rights on their ass maybe.

Interesting it is only 5 months old bought it in Smyths newry. Going to test the games on neighbours Wii first though - if not working is it possible to exchange them?

If the wii is in a smokey/dusty room then it's the lens getting dirty that's your problem, not the games.
    Try one of these:
