What is the going rate for an '03 Merc E200 Auto these days?
Not worried about leather too much but auto and elegance or avantgarde trim would be wanted as the classic trim is a bit too plain.
It seems possible to get them for the 14 to 15K mark but with cash in hand would one be able to do better than that?

    14k roughly.

Edit: Only just see you already said that at the end of your post. In my opinion, Mercs aren't really going anywhere, so get yourself a nice high spec one. Avantgarde has a good spec, leather/sunroof etc.

I'd say if you pushed a hard bargain 12-13k should buy you one.

An E Class without leather interior would be worth substantially less and harder to shift than a similar car with leather.

It's something I'm willing to compromise on if it saves me a couple of grand knowing that resale will be compromised afterward.
Manual gearbox is an absolute no-no though.

Here is a 04 with half leather and auto, you should be able to buy it close to your budget:

    Great value for money IMO

Beautiful car. My old fella had a 270CDI, surely the 1.8 petrol Auto is woefully underpowered though?

It's not really, 135bhp. It's no racer, but there's plenty enough poke in it.

any intrest in a 02 C200 Kompressor Saloon, Auto..it's a quick car with 12mts tax and new continental shoes...

i'm after an alfa GT Diesel...

    167bhp with supercharger. 140mph 0-60 in around 9.something seconds.
It doesn't deliver the power as smoothly as a larger capacity merc engine but still very acceptable when cruising at 70mph and when tootling around town.

My father has one so I'm familiar with the car but just want to get a feeling for prices.

I'm tempted to wait until jan '10 when the new model will have been seen around and about depressing prices of the W211 further.

@ drunkmonkey, I'm more interested in an E-class than a C-class to be honest.

I happen to know of a trader who's just taken a load of '05 E200 Classic Auto's in (12 I think) so the price should be cheap enough. It's www.walshmotors.ie but I think he only sells to the trade.

If you have a friendly local garage who'd buy off him and sell to you there may be a good deal available.

If you'd have asked last week..........

They're not great by all accounts, electrics and engines seem to be still be giving loads of trouble, plenty of them going through the auctions at knock down prices lately and nobody rushing to buy them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭rivegauche

    what's a knockdown price?
I'm aware of the very serious auto transmission leakage issue on early ones and if the electrics aren't right when viewing one I'd be walking away not negotiating a discount.

I'd say you'd easily get one for 10k. There is a new model out now so expect prices to be falling sharply soon. Even at that price I don't think they're great value. With the exception of ride quality, they don't really have much else going for them imo.

I'm not sure if you'd get one for 10k now, but you will soon enough.
Dynamics wise, they are not a great car to drive or own.

And have rather miserable little engines it seems, why people, why!?

For the Irish environment E200 was the perfect executive luxury car.
1.8 litre supercharged engine to reduce VRT exposure/motor tax costs and relatively easy on fuel.
I have previous experience of this car and the engine is not a bad engine, just a little bit coarse for the type of car the E-class is. It is plenty quick.
I have a specific job to do which is to travel at 130KMPH on a straight motorway and crawl along in backed up city traffic in Dublin. An Auto E200 will do this job perfectly well at a cheap purchase price and in Avantgarde or Elegance trim the E200 will have every extra I need.

If I was living in another country, an E200 would not be my choice but I live in Ireland and 600 euro for motor tax is more than I'm willing to pay.
Having spent €2500 on petrol from my fuel card in the last financial year of which around 70% goes straight to government I don't want to see my hard earned money going straight to wastrels in central-government.
