Im using a mac (osx) running Pro Tools and have deleted files from one of the drives.

The manual says when you do this the files are irretrievable.

    please say it isnt so..

Lifehacker have a write up on a few free data recovery tools Here.

    Could be worth a shot!

I would caution the use of TestDisk/Photorec since they seem to recover only simple files like text and images ( do that quite well ). More complex stuff will not be recognised properly and will create thousands of text files which you will trawl through with increasing frustration ( I speak from personal experience ).

If the lost files are on an external drive dont use it until you install Data Rescue (ProSoft ) on your Mac. This application is not free but how much is your data worth?

Data Rescue II - I have successfully recovered data from a few Macs in work with it. The trial version will perform a scan and show you what can be recovered so you can see whether or not it's worth buying the software.

+1 for Data Rescue. Rescued me from a world of pain a few years ago when a drive went belly up.

Does time machine not do this?

That's a back-up/archiving system. If it hasn't been archived or backed-up, you'll be stuffed without file-recovery tools to recover that which has been deleted without back-ups.

Or from an external drive, which isn't covered by time-machine.

TM can back up external drives as well.

Ah yes, sorry - I should have been clearer. I meant, if you have an external drive which you are not explicitly backing-up with Time Machine. I have a few of those, since it seems to me that backing up drives you only occasionally have connected is something you need to do explicitly, rather you getting asked to do when you have Time Machine activated...
