Training Routes (with hills)

Hi folks. I have been doing all of my training spins for WW200 in Wicklow.

With only a few weeks to go I am looking to stay fresh by adding some variety to my w/e spins. In that regard I am looking for a new training spin.

Ideally a minimum of 100km from Phoenix Pk in Dublin to max of say 160km.
I need hills, would prefer a min of 1200m of climbing with a lot of sections greater than 5/6%.

At this stage I have cycled Sally Gap (from all sides), Wicklow Gap from Laragh, Slieve Maan and Shay Elliot.

If I could find a new route I would not go near the WW200 route until the day itself (in order to look forward to the day, and not become stale).

Does anybody have any suggestions please, of interesting challenging routes close to Dublin.

I am actually thinking of heading down to Portlaoise on the train at the w/e to cycle Slieve Blooms - so feel free to suggest any routes in the Leinster region.
I will be doing Mt Leinster next week hopefully, so no need to suggest that one.

Get train to Newry and you have the Mourne and Cooley mountains

Bohernabreena is always a tough one, especially if you take a right near the top to continue the climb for a few km.

You could also do laps of Howth. That's what I do when the weather looks too dodgy to go all the way to Wicklow.

It's a left, isn't it? That's the way the club league TT goes anyway.

    Yes, you're right, it's a left, not a right.

    I'll do a map when I get a chance.

    Thanks for the ideas folks.

@Tonto - am I correct in thinking that if I go up Bohernabreena from Brittas, that there is a turn off that will bring me up to Military Road/Kilakee.

Also, does anyone know how to get to the climb that emty does from Sally Gap to Kilbride, but turns right before Kilbride: That is can you do this from Bohernabreena?

@Raam never done the Devils Glen - map if you get a chance?

If you're coming from the Brittas side, the turn off is to the right, about 300m after the highest point. The climb from the Tallaght side is the tough one though.

Emty can confirm, but I'm thinking that's the back side of the longer Bohernabreena climb, in other words, you'll come out at that turn near the top of Bohernabreena.

Bohernabreena is a nice climb, get you up to just 500 mts. Presume you have taken Stocking lane as well.

Sounds like your looking for something like the Mount Leister challenge?

Thanks a lot guys. That really helps.
@ Raam - I have descended into Ashford from Roundwood before (the other road on the may) crazy descent, I guess similar gradien to the climb ou of Ashford on your map.

@ Tonto, - thanks for that. I think that I will do Bohernabreena at the w/e. I have seen guys cycle onto Military Road/Stocking Lane from that direction in the past, as I have come up from Rathfarnham. I will try go up Bohernabreena from the side you suggested, and then retrace my steps to the Emty route to Kilbride or to Military Road.

Just a quick query - why do boards spins not head up Stocking Lane &/or Bohernabreena, more often, as opposed to Stepaside direction??

You would think from my post that I was a monster climber looking to best new challenges - fact is I am a poor climber, but I do like it. My goal really is to avoid doing the same thing over and over again (I would get stale I think). I also want to avoid doing too much of the WW200 route in next few weeks, as I want to enjoy the experience on the day (I'm a 1st timer), and I have done Sally Gap, Shay Elliott enough now at this stage.

Not sure really. Probably because the Boards spins started as W200 training, so people got used to heading out that direction. If I'm on my own, I'll often head to the hills via Edmundstown Road (hard than Stocking Lane in my opinion) or Bohernabreena.

I think that's it -it originally started out as WW200 training, then became habit -also, it's possibly the quickest way into the quieter roads and hills from Dundrum, which is the standard start point

Have been doing Edmonstown route for past four weeks and really like it.
Its a toughy alright. TBH, I dont think that I would have been able for it a few months back, but now I can pace myself up it.
Not complaining about the boards spins I have been on (really found them helpful). But Edmondstown is a fair bit tougher than the road to Enniskerry.

When some of you mentioned going by train do you just walk your bike on ready to ride or do you have to take wheels off etc. ??

Buy a bike tkt for 8euros.
Put bike in gaurds van or the special cupboard on the new trains.
Can be difficult as Irish Rail just dont like bikes for some reason.
