Caught speeding yesterday (139 kph in 120 zone) on the N11. 80 euro fine and 2 penalty points the gard said.

Now, do I have to inform my insurance company (quinn-direct) of the points? Will it void my insurance if I don't?

Sorry if this is a repeat question, couldn't find any similar posts in the search engine.

    Cheers.

What does it say in your policy documentation?

You generally do, AFAIK. I'm with Hibernian, and failure to disclose points results in a €2000 excess.

One thing to note is that unless things have changed (which I doubt) it seems to be taking an eternity for the points to actually be applied to peoples licenses. The points only come into force when they're applied so you shouldn't need to inform your insurance company until they're formally there.

I think what he is asking is does he have to declare the points mid-policy. I was under the impression that you did not have to declare the points until renewal as the premium has already been calculated.

I wouldn't worry about it for a while anyway op as it could be months before they apply the points, you can only be sure you actually get points when the letter arrives telling you that they have been applied.

Just ring them with your policy number AFIK 2 points won't result in any loading, they have access to the information if they choose to look for it (claim) so you would be much better off disclosing.

You don't need to declare the points until you go to renew the policy, and they won't give a **** about two points for speeding anyway.

I dont think insurance companies are too worried about 2 points on your license and they wont load your insurance. I'd say at the stage a large portion of the countries drivers have 2 points.

I have 2 points, mentioned it on the renewal of my insurance and they never batted an eyelid at it, the didnt even put my premium up a cent from the original renewal quote.

Best just to let them know in case as they could mention it if a claim ever goes in.

As I said in my earlier post, check your documentation. If it stipulates that you must contact them then do so. Oterwise, say nothing!

Just ring them up and tell them, you're going to have to at some stage - and from what I've heard there is no loading with quinn for 2 points.

Could someone clear up why the points are valid from the date of processing and not the date of the offence? Is it due to the possibility of an appeal?

It seems a bit ridiculous that someone should have to live with penalty points for a few months(in a lot of cases I suppose) more then is really necessary.

The delay is down to the registered owner either accepting the points (may not have been them) or to an appeal outcome.

You don't live with the points for any longer then 3 years. You get caught for a points offence, admit it and pay fine. Wait for letter that tells you the date you get the points then ring your insurance company and tell them you have X points on X date.

OP I'd tell your insurance company you have points when you get the confirmation letter, why risk getting your policy voided for a 2 points. AFAIK with all policies you have to inform then of any changes to your car or you, and I really wouldn't want to risk it with Quinn.

Only Hibernian have access to the penalty points database. The other companies have to take your word for it.

Why tell them early if you don't have to? Some goon in the office might apply a loading immediately when they should really wait until renewal. The OP should check their policy wording before saying anything.

So if you make a claim they still can't check?

...and any 'reseller' for hibernian such as Tesco and ONe Direct IIRC.
