Hi All, I am doing my first tri in June, and have decided it's time to get a bit of practice swimming in the sea.
Does any one have any advice on safe locations for this practice? I would presume I will have to travel to some where in Clare or North Kerry for this.

In Clare Kilkee harbour is a good spot and there are often swimmers there. If you PM MCOS who posts here he might have a better idea as he is based in Limerick. Best of luck with the triathlon.

For anyone OW swimming, the usual advice applies, never swim alone, be mindful of the water conditions and temperatures, always let someone know when you expect to be home....

Silkey have you joined a club? Are you training for the Hell of the West?

    Hi MCOS,
No I haven't joined a club. I'm doing the training on my own generally, and the odd cycle with a friend. I haven't swam in a wet suit before, so I want to get some practice doing that. Can you recommend any where around Limerick that would be safe? I'm based in Limerick City.

Limerick triathlon club should be able to help you with a list of lakes they go swimming in.

Ennis Tri club goes swimming in Lake Bunnie, near Corofin.
20 mins past that is lahinch, it's okay to swim in once you get out past the waves and you're not getting in or out at high tide.

I'm in much the same boat as yourself - first timer, Limerick based and not in a club, training with a mate. We've done a few OW swims on Saturdays, if we do them in Limerick we go into the Ardnacrusha canal.... other wise Kilkee, you cant beat it but its an hour away.

If you want to try Ardnacrusha let me know - I'll be going in either tomorrow or Sunday as I'm going to lose my cherry next Saturday in Valentia ... bring it on

Hi Guys, joining the Limerick Tri club is one of the best things I've done in ages. Very friendly and welcoming for beginners. I'm doing Valentia also as my first OW event this weekend. I bought an entry level blue seventy Sprint wetsuit in Gleesons last week and there is a 10% discount for Limerick Tri members in there. I'm heading out to Killaloe this evening for a dip in the lake, its about 40 mins drive from Limerick. I posted a message on the LTC forum www.limericktriathlon.ie about OW swimming too.

Also, LTC are organising a training weekend in Kilkee which would be great prep if you are doing the Hell of the West, They will be swimming in the bay, cycling over the bike course and running teh run course all with advice and tips from 2 coaches €50 plus accomodation which there are also deals on... should be a good one :D
