I'm looking to buy a laptop and I'm being a picky about what I want. Here's one I customised on Dell..

    Dell Studio 15

    Intel Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
    Vista Home Premium SP1
15.6in Widescreen High Definition (1366x768) WLED with TrueLife
    4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
320GB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Hard Drive
512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570
Fixed Internal DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software
Primary 9-cell 85 WHr Lithium Ion battery

    €920

The laptop will not be used as my desktop replacement, I'm going to move to Canada for about a year and won't be able to bring over my desktop, so I need something to handle my needs. I'll be using it for photo editing (Raw files, around 11MB each), some video editing, web design and general multimedia stuff, I don't play games.

My main worry is, will I find the resolution (1366x768) too low for working with large images (I'm used to working on a 24"). I don't want to go over 16", but I'd love to have a higher resolution.

Another thing I'm wondering about; is it difficult/possible/worth taking out the HD and replacing it with a SSD. If it's possible and recommended, would it remove my need for a 9 cell battery?

My budget is around a grand, but I could be tempted to go over. Any advice is much appreciated, cheers!

EDIT: Not stuck on a dell, haven't been able to find a laptop like the one I customised yet! Any recommendations?

Not as good as the dell but all i could see on laptopsdirect.ie with a WSXGA+ screen (1600 x 1050)

Not sure about the compatability of SSD drives. Would depend on the laptop. 250Gig drive is still about 600 euro so there would be a big cash issue! You could get a 60 gig for €150 and use an external hard drive for holding your photos etc.

Not sure it would be worth the hassle / money tbh

Thanks for the recommendations, but I think comparing those and the dell, the dell has too many pro's for my needs compared to them.

Cheers for the info on the SSD's, I was thinking about buying a small one, but I think i'll leave it.

One thing I'm wondering about, when choosing a wireless card, the options available are:

Dell Wireless 1510 Half Mini Card (802.11n) add € 0.00
    Intel WiFi Link 5300 Half Mini Card (802.11 a/g/n) (Centrino) [add € 20.00 or € 0.75/month1]
    Intel WiFi Link 5100 (802.11 a/b/g/n 1X2) 1/2 MiniCard [Included in Price]

I have no clue which one to go for. Any advice?

The power consumption of current SSDs compared to an efficient platter-drive is nothing much to shout about in the grand scheme of things. I wouldn't bother putting one in if the only reason is battery life. Whatever about the performance benefits and reliability etc.

1366x768 is indeed a fairly low resolution for that size of screen. It's also 16:9 aspect, which is not the most effective use of space for photo editing (unless your photos happen to be in 16:9 obviously :pac:). I'd go for a 16:10 display personally. Also consider whether you want a glossy/matte display.
