45 minutes would be a good enough starting time for 20km. Don't worry if its less though - everyone has to start somewhere

To get 45 minutes, you would need to maintain 27 km/h (17mph)
To get 50 minutes, you would need to maintain 24 km/h (15mph)
To get 55 minutes, you would need to maintain 22 km/h (14mph)
To get one hour, you would need to maintain 20 km/h (12mph)

I hope this helps! A speedometer on your bike will be very valuble (you probably have one though). A heart rate monitor is also great.

Remember though, headwinds can make quite a significant impact on speed so don't worry if it decreases from day to day

Hi recharge. Good work for planning the tri. They're great fun.
Hard to say for sure for the cycle- it depends on lots of variables- type of bike, road surface, hills and the wind. The top cyclists would be doing 35-40kph or so for the cycle, so finishing in about 30 mins, 25-30kph (40 -45mins) would get you a respectable time. That would be a road bike-it would be hard to hold those times on a hybrid or mountain bike.
Don't forget to keep something in reserve for the run though!

A good idea is to look at the results for a particular race from previous years. It will give you some idea about where in the pack you will be.

To be honest my main aim is to finish and not be last with so old lad falling over the line, i know that sounds bad but thats what im aiming for. Just want to learn the experience for the first one and then try to set targets!!

The times posted above sounds managable enough, not looking foward to the swim as that would be my weakiest part!

which triathlon are you doing and where are you based. There are lots of swim groups around the country and they are great confidence builders.
