    Hi

Anyone know what the quality/speed is like in Cabinteely? I'm looking at getting the meteor wireless - 14.99 per month 29 euro for gadget (I'm not v tech savvy!) but looking at the coverage map on the meteor site I can't see exactly - seems like speed might change around Loughlinstown but I can see the cut off point cos the location is in the way.

    Thanks

tbh your best bet is to call into a meteor store. the coverage maps in the stores are much more precise and detailed than the one on the site. i'd be fairly confident about cabinteely coverage but it's better to be sure

Thanks - I was in the store and they were unsure! They only had the online map themselves and suggested I try and find out from someone who was using it in the area!

Trish i have used the dongle for broadband and im only down the road from you in deansgrange. Ive gotten 1.5 meg down and 1 up. That was when they were testing it so you could well get better speeds now

Or worse, since more people will be using it now. This is the nature of 3G, it'll get worse as it becomes popular. Just look at Three. They were cited as being a savior when they first came on the market, 6 months later and they surpassed all other ISPs as being the worst one in the country.

Not saying Meteor are heading that way, but as more users come onboard, the available bandwidth gets swallowed up, and you end up with lower speeds.

i dont know which store you were in but they should have a fully updated google earth file showing coverage quality down to individual house level, the one on the web site is nowhere near the same level of detail. i'm thinkin' the closest store to you is probably Dún Laoghaire, i'd pop in, from the sales figures i've seen it's pretty clear that the lads in there know their stuff

Thanks for the input and forgive the ignorance that will become clear as I write! I went ahead and bought the meteor cos I'm moving house and wanted to debug before I lost my eircom broadband. Finally got up and running after 3 frustrating calls to foreign helpdesks!

So it seems really really slow (here in clonskeagh at the moment). When I hover my cursor over the icon it says speed 236.8 kbps - whereas my eircom broadband shows 11 mbps. Now have to admit I don't know anything about technology but does this mean that the meteor is less than 10% the speed of the eircom? If so what can I do - I don't think I can live with this poor speed even if it is cheaper.........my neck is already tense. Should I return the meteor and if I do what alternative are there other than eircom?

it looks like you are only getting edge speeds in your current location, meteor will never be as high or as reliable as your eircom service, have you tried doing a speedtest?

3G can never ever on average be anything like as good as Fixed Broad band (Fibre, phone wires, TV cable or Fixed Outdoor Wireless).

10% is not unusual. 1% is possible. My Fixed outdoor wireless is 7.4Mbps (7400kbps) to 8Mbps.

If you have WiFi, the 11Mbps is simply the speed of the WiFi connection to the eircom Modem. Which could be any speed from 512k to 20Mbps depending on your package.

11Mbps WiFi is typically about 3Mbps throughput. That would be 802.11b mode or a very weak signal on 802.11a, g or n modes.

If your PC or Laptop is old, the speed limit will be the WiFi adaptor on it (which can be changed) rather than the WiFi/Modem point which is usually 54Mbps 802.11g

My laptop was only 11Mbps 802.11b and when we upgraded the WiFi Point (originally 2Mbps when we had dialup in 1999) from 11Mbps to Turbo G 802.11g (108Mbps) I swapped the internal card on my laptop for a new Atheros TurboG that does 802.11a, b and g.
802.11n is up to 250Mbps but very short range, quickly drops back to 125, 54, 22 or 11 depending on range.

In all cases you need compatible WiFi point AND similar WiFi in Gadgets etc.
