Well folks its here, I'm in the process of setting it up on the mediaserver at home. So far so good, the MC UI is nice and the OS in much more efficient than Vista. Mediaserver is an OC'd Athlon XP 3000+ with 1GB RAM, pretty archaic.

At a glance it seems (as usual) very US-Centric, but I figured plenty over people back home will be trying it.

My advise, definately give it a go. If you just want to play, download VMWare server (Free) from here http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ and install it on there.

If anyone is looking to Windows 7 for a media center setup you're better off going 32bit as all solutions for playing MKV files and changing the default decoder inside Media Center work nicely on 32bit, and not so nicely on 64bit.

I have Irish DTT working through Media Center which is nice. The built in H.264 decoder is not so great with Live TV at the moment it seems, so I forced CoreAVC to be the preferred decoder and it's working ok.

MKV support can be added by installed Haali Media Splitter and ffdshow.

It has a 14 day EPG for Irish DTT (not sure if it's getting the EPG data from the internet or from the DVB packets) and digital teletext works too.

Installed the RC 32bit at the weekend and am well impressed. Much smoother and faster than Vista. Loads of nice touches to the UI and very stable.

elyod - How did you force MC to use CoreAVC? Is that with the checkup utility? What does MC do for mpeg2 then? Can CoreAVC handle mpeg2 too? I'll be trying to include DTT too soon in my setup.

I used The Media Center Decoder Utility, you can download it here. You have to run it as administrator for it to work.

When attempting to play mpeg2 it seems to fall back on whatever mpeg2 decoder you have installed.
