It probably plays most, but .avi is just a container. It would depend on the encoding of the file and the codecs on the player.

I'd like to find out if it's region-free myself, as it is a pretty good deal...

Well the advert on the newspaper(Herald) says it has MPEG4 so i'd be confident it would play .avi movie files from a DVR+RW disc but i wouldnt be sure it would do it from the usb.
The reason i ask is because some divX dvd players with a usb port can only read .jpegs and .mp3 audio files from usb.

I'll be getting one first thing tomorrow & will report back. All silvercrests are easy to make region free.

Seems like good value. Does anyone know if this model plays .avi movie files from the usb?.

Got an earlier model a year or two ago, same basic thnigy, just no HDMI and it plays avi's off the USB port and SD cards.

A bit slow to load, but otherwise grand, plays 99% of the avi files i get...

Don't think that Tesco one has USB though I could be wrong - last one I saw there didn't anyway.
Lidl one will play pretty much anything and has component out for surround sound which is great value .

Tested on SD TV with Scart - Model KH 6520

Got one this morning from Listowel, plays DVD's extremely well, very good at this.

Unfortunately I cant test the playback via USB (which is all I wanted it for) as it has a limit of 1 gig! and I don't have anything that small.

Did not see my 16gig, 8 gig or 4 gig, or my 320gig HD. Light just kept flashing.

This means mine goes back first thing saturday.

Other than that, is a fine unit with lots of features.

    To go region free:
    1. Open Tray
    2. Press 9,9,9,9
    3. Press 9 again and "9" will appear at the top of the screen briefly
    4. Close tray
    5. Switch off and on again.

    HDMI DVD Player - Lidl - €44.99 (November 2008)

    lidl dvd player (March 2009)

The player does recognise USB devices > 1GB, but needs to be formatted FAT32. I've had mixed results with USB keys, but all my SD cards read file (max I've tried is 4GB). USB powered external HDD won't work because the USB does not provide enough power. Powered HDD drives that are recognised take a very long time to load however.

Do you mean it has a separate output for each channel and won't need an external 5.1 amp? Are you sure? The website just says optical & coaxial.

... it does have analogue 5.1 componenet audio outputs

Just unpacked it & tried again.

All USB Drives as FAT 32 = fail
USB HDD, FAT 32, left for 20 mins = fail

All these devices work on my other DVD player.

I bought one today (there was one left in Moore St shop when I left) and I'm quite pleased. I have it playing region 1 DVDs using the method described by ch750536, and I have it playing AVI files on an 8gb USB Key without having had to format it a particular way. It doesn't play WMV though. I thought it would, but it only lists WMA on the box.

As mentioned earlier, it does indeed have analog 5.1 out, which is fantastic as I don't have an AV receiver (I was tempted by those Richer Sounds offers though!) and I was quite pleased to see that it has a VGA out as well.

    Great bargain for €45!

i got one last year from Lidl. Not very happy. It used to play from my previous USB key but i lost it. Now I tried few more (3 in total) with no success. I formatted them to FAT32 but nothing happens.

Last night I did get it to play from :

A faulty 8gig Corsair flash (the non faulty one didnt work!)
A 2gig micro SD in an SD adapter.

None of my other products play no matter what I do (tried 6 or 7, including powered HDD).

Mine works well, up to 200GB HDD FAT32, 8GB PEN OCZ, or 2GB Goodram )I own), loadign slow, but better loading both into the 32LH3000 LCD TV, USB (modified firware)
