As the amount of people who import and pay VRT varies from year to year, I see it as a bonus for the revenue commissionsers. So where does the money go, what is it spent on.

Could some of it go on campaigns like the cervical cancer injections etc. Would just like to know where it goes.

Would an anmesty rate of 25% for Vrt, or any other initiative from now till end of year encourage people to get it sorted

An amnesty rate?? Are you for real?? so someone paid 36% last week but because some tool has been driving around on foreign plates for 6 months he gets it for 25%?

Also, the money goes on general expenditure, the same as any other tax like income tax or VAT.

It would be nice if the had to account to someone for it, I know the 6k I spent on VRT probably helped change 12 lightbulbs, it's good they took it off me, I would have only done something stupid like give someone a job..

They do - us. We freely elect a government to decide how to spend the money, if you don't like what they're doing then vote them out.;)

You did. Clearly it requires some one to fix those 12 lightbulbs.

Does the OP really see VRT as this little golden goose that the government doesn't realise the potential of?

    Surely nobody's that deluded?

That just sounds like youre pissed you'd be on the wrong side of the fence. Amnesties are never good for those outside their scope.. What he proposed would encourage VRT dodgers to tax the car without a large, expensive and ineffective "crack down". Its not that mad an idea.

I'd be pissed off because a.) it's unjust, and b.) it would reward tax fraud.

The ones "on the other side of the fence" being the ones that obey the law? How is punishing them in any way fair? And what about all the people immediately after the amnesty that again choose not to pay their VRT?

Best way is just a proper clampdown and make the dodgers pay in full.I dont see how a crackdown is expensive, it can be done in the normal course of the Gards and custom officials work.

I see it as a bonus for the revenue commissionsers.

VRT is vastly down on previous years, one of the reasons that the government has no money.

Before Im lynched, wait a sec!
Im not condoning it or saying you (we) shouldnt be pissed off. Im just saying it a) may work and b) naturally those that it doesnt benefit will be pissed off and I guess c) the OP isnt our pariah. I also didnt say it was fair, amnesties arent fair to someone by definition.

Like a gun amnesty, illegal alien amnesty etc, its a given a large number of people will be angry, but a lot of people being angry doesnt mean its stupid or wouldnt work now does it?

On the contrary, it often means it would work! Thing is, working wouldn't make it right.

a couple of years ago a friend of mine that started importing cars ,
he was the first in ireland to do so early 90's ..
he brought the goverment to court ' to abolish VRT

it cost him 20million pound/punt at the time ,
he now lives in alicante .
his brother still brings cars in but has slowed down in these hard times lol

Where did you get 36% from? Its 32% for private cars if you bothered to check, I know cause I paid it 2 weeks ago and guess what I would be all for an amnesty or an instrument that would encourage payment i.e. a staggered payment method or percentage towards something like the governments overseas aid package that got cut.

What I mean is its a tax we pay, its not taken off us, so surely the amount the government gets is unpredictable.

Me thinks there were tax amnesties in the 80s & 90s. Feel free to correct me if i am wrong but make sure you bother to check first.

It's 32% for your car, the top rate is 36%.;)

    Enforcement would encourage payment.

There were a lot of things going on in the 80s & 90s that I want to see happen again.

Wrong. You pay VRT on a private car at one of seven rates between 14% and 36% dependent on the CO2 output of your vehicle. It just so happened that your particular import was in the second highest bracket at 32%.

I would be for a different sort of instrument that encourages payment: Seize a few yellow reg cars and crush them on national television, just before the lottery draw, camera on the registered owner.

I'd Pay Per View for that.

Stand corrected on the VRT rate and I do apologise.

You say that enforcement is the way to get people to pay, but no such thing exists in my experience, got away with using yellow plates at my leisure cos I knew nothing would be done.

How would you encouage peeps to pay VRT, thats basiclly the crux of this thread as the way things are done now are a joke and hold no weight.
