Temporary Tax?

    Right,

I'm looking to sell 2 old cars that I've are sitting on the family driveway since I bought a new car a good few months ago.

Both are driving and have current NCTs and my insurance has open drive so I'm covered for driving them in those respects.

Problem is the tax is up on both of them. I need to do a few bits and pieces with them that necessitates bring them on the road, (To the petrol station etc.) Don't want to tax a car for 3 months, when I can get whats needed done in one day.
I called the motor office and am no clearer, google is not my friend and trawling through a years worth of 'tax' threads got me nothing?

Where do I stand if I (legitimatly,) declare the cars off the road, could I then drive them around for 1 day? Or bring someone on a testdrive if required?

The short answer is no i'm afraid, it's either tax for 3 months or risk getting caught.

Or pay someone who has trade plates to take them to the fuel station etc. for you.

i would take the chance without hesitation, how far away can your petrol station be. Go at peak times if afraid of getting caught. police not out then

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Well the fine for no tax is 50 euro i think but if its more than 2 months out they can take the car off you. so might be better just to take the hit if they are large engines

regarding your open drive policy - i checked the full terms of my insurance recently and driving cars that are registered in my name is NOT allowed. I'd check it out if i were you.

If you want to live on the edge get a mate to drive their car about 5 miles ahead of yours and then he can give you a call if he runs in to a checkpoint. If you want to live in the real world just get a petrol can and cycle, walk, run to the petrol station to get fuel. If you want to sell them they normally sell quicker if tax is up to date so 3 months shouldn't break the bank unless they are >2 litre tanks you are selling.
