Anyone know of any garages in the republic that are doing decent scrappage deals?
Decided to feck going for half decent cars and to get something nice and sensible ;-) reckon i'd be better off scrapping my car than hoping for any sort of a decent trade.. Willing to spend up to and around 10ish..that's not including a trade in or scrap deal. Just names of garages will do if anyone has them thanks..

Ha, asking price will do fine thanks :-p Really want to change cars.. Don't really mind what to at this stage as long as it isn't terribly slow.

Surely you're not thinking of scrapping the 106? A garage scrappage deal is only a cash discount by another name, you don't need to actually scrap a car that's worth something.

First search for car you are interested in. (Carzone) Then in the search box on down on left hand side type in the words "scrappage" . This will at least narrow down your search

Thanks for that kartale, may try it.

And anan, it's just because I hate the whole hassle of selling the car and i'm afraid i'm going to have to let it go for a terrible low price.

Yeah i wouldn't mind that at all Gary, think i'd prefer the passat though!

Anan's right, there are no scrappage deals, only renamed discount.

If you were buying a new car you might worry about those discounts as you'd be taking them off of an RRP.
If you're looking at a second-hand car then the discount (or scrappage deal) doesn't make a difference, only the price does.

The worst case scenario is that you trade the 106 in and get whatever the salesman can trade your car out for plus the cash discount against your new car. I'll give you an example:

Your new car is listed at €10,000, the garage would sell it straight for €8,500, ie a €1500 discount. Salesman looks at your car, calls the trade, gets an offer of €1400 for it. Salesman takes €7,100 from you to change, gets €1,400 from the trade for your car. Salesman has his €8,500, you have your new car for €7,100 plus your car, you're €1,400 better off than you would have been had you scrapped the 106.

Was just gona post my first thread on this, i went around a few places looking for scrappage deals, they don't really exist to be honest, find a the car you want as cheap as possible, and garages will give you something off regards a trade in.
One car the wife was interested in was an Almera 06-07
Here was our options; Our car is worth SFA . 500 is what we were being offered, hence looking at scrappage deals. Windsor had ads around went into them
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1306763
    Windsor 13,500 for 07 Almera !! Offered 3,000 off for my banger = 10,500

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1357869

Merlin Motor City 9,500 and offered 800 off for our car = 8,700

    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=1388856

Bill Griffin Motors 7,550 , and said minimum of 500 off for my car (hadn't got it with me) So say 7,000.

Now i know differences in mileages, but hopefully gona do a deal on last one, no wonder main dealers are struggling, better service in Merlin and Griffins, and were both very busy unlike Windsor.

Plenty more views and stories from shopping around this weekend , gona really get posting been lurking but never had anything to add!! Cheers DC

edit... See Anan1 got same idea in before me, sub your car in for my banger and you see still same deal from Windsor ,but assume bigger savings from other two garages.

What? If someone comes in with a trade in I'll never quote a discounted price. The cost to change is back up against the full retail, irrelevant to what that may be.

If you're going to retail the trade-in, sure. But if you're going to dump it straight out to the trade then you have whatever you get for it plus the discount on the car you're selling to work with.

Aye, but you wouldn't give a discount first, just more on the trade him. Anyway, simple matters, each to their own.

Of course not, that'd be much too complicated for most customers anyway! I was just explaining to the OP how it actually worked.;)

Telling customers the way it really works, it's a novel idea but I don't think it'll catch on in car sales... :p

It just sounds alot better when you can offer some one 3k on a trade in. I guarantee if you said 1.5k discount, and 1.5k trade, you'd get your head chopped off, where as both are the same cost to change.

The reason i was asking about decent scrapage deals was that it'd be possible to buy something new or nearly new if i got 3k in a scrapage deal and upgraded my budget a bit..

Thanks for telling me how it works though, that may just work!
