Hi, we bought it at auction, in St Lucia of all places. we got a certifate of authenticity with it, and it states its a steel engraving.

I will post a picture tomorow,
    Thanks :)

Its just a tourist trinket - they knock out hundreds of them. I'll give you a tenner for it, I can pick it up this evening if you like... ;)

    No image yet Jake,....

But unfortunately , when you get a "cert of authenticity" it is almost a sure-fire statement that it is a fake.

These certificates mean absolutely zero , and hope to con tourists and unsuspecting punters.
The certificates are backed up by nobody and hold no valididty anywhere.

Steel engravings are not of so much value generally.

The copper engravings are earlier and much more limited.

The copper plates were pressed hard onto the paper , and the more "impressions" made the blunter the plates got.
So , soon enough the copper plate would be tooo worn to make any more prints.

They then decided to engrave onto steel plates , which had a much higher durability , and could produce a whole heap more prints !!
Therefor the steel engraving is not generally worth as much !

Even still , we should be able to date your map from the type of paper it is , and the appearance of ireland in the map image .

    Cheers ,
    Odd-Job
