Sky door sales offer - too good to be true!?

Had a salesman at the door last night with an unbelievalbe offer to up-grade to sky+ which I've wanted to upgrade to but have put off as its soooo expensive if you're an existing customer. Anyway, the offer was upgrade to sky+ and only pay the installation of €50, get sky+ box, multiroom and 320 channels all for €28.50 per month. However - and this is why I'm dubious - I would have to cancel my current subscription once I sign up with this guy and by the time sky cancel me they would have installed the new equipment etc. I'm not sure whether he actually works for Sky or not, had a jacket and folder with Sky logo and he gave me his supervisor's card to ring with any questions, which I did twice but went to voicemail. Has anyone heard of this offer or know if its genuine?

Sure thats the price for new customers anyways, you could do the same thing yourself. Technically its fraud though. He does not work for Sky but will get commission somehow. As a general rule, I NEVER buy anything from anybody knocking at the door no matter how genuine they look.

If you are doing this you would be better off calling Sky and cancelling your contract. If they ask, tell them you have split up from your wife, they won't ask anymore questions. Hang up and call straight backup and order a new install in your wifes name. If you're not married, do the same, except set it up to a second address. That is, if you live in No: 52 Some Street, order it to No: 52A Some Street.

Technically this is fraud I suppose, so the above is only a hypotetical scenario and I don't endorse it at all

Ignore the sales guy, he is of no use to you really.

Hi, Im an independent retailer in the westmeath area and we do this offer but only to ppl who kinda complain about paying the existing customer prices...basically you cancel your current contract and you sign up in another persons name (IE other half) then its the same as when you first signed up...but you must be out of your first year. Technically it is not fraud as you have cancelled and your other half is signing.

Yes it is fraud. The subscriber is lying about having Sky already installed in their home.

The equipment and install are heavily subsidised for new subscribers because Sky know they will get at least 12 months of a sub from them, and more than likely much more than this.

You are engaged in a practice of encouraging subscribers to avail of this subsidy more than once and Sky are unlikely to approve.

I have 2 subs one with my Irish address and the other with my old London address, both boxes are here in Ireland. Over the years I have come to the opinion that Sky are only interested in getting their money after that they could not careless. When they ask I say travel a lot! Fraud is a very serious crime what you are doing is civil matter.

I've been with sky for quite a while and whenever a new offer like that comes along i just ring them up and explain that i've been a good customer but want to avail of the 'new' customer promotion.
Every time they have given it to me - they are alot more understanding than you think and seem to want to keep current subscribers happy. After all - it's easier to keep a customer than to get a new customer!!
You should just ring them and ask them upfront.

I agree thats by far the best way to do it.

thats what i did with BT BB when they brought out the Voyager wireless modem and they were more than happy to help me out by sending one even though i didnt qualify.

If you are paid on commission then what has fair got to do with it? How much you earn will depend on how hard you work and how much you sell.

Very, very few. I would not buy a "Sky box thingy" from you no matter how skint you are! :-)
