I noticed this interesting thought for the day by TJ of Loughrea AC:
The times they are a changing!!!

Up to 2008 only 5 men in all of history had run under 2 hours 6 minutes for the marathon. CAN YOU NAME THEM?

Answer: Khannouchi, Tergat, Korir, Rutto, Gebrselassie.

In the first 4 months of 2009 8 men have run 2:05 or better.

    UNREAL!!!

Very well put and puts things in perspective! In marathon running this truly has been the golden year.

Makes you wonder how far off a sub 2 hour marathon we are:eek:

I can see the record going in Berlin this year tbh...just look at how close they were in London.

Its like the mile though...nobody could break 4 before Bannister, then he does it and everybody and his mother is going under 4*

    *slight exaggeration:D

I still think that Haile might go faster again. I really think all his years on the track and the control he showed in regards pace in his record was amazing. The ypunger guys might be capable of going faster just need to control it a bit more .. 1:01 was just too fast in london... Seems that all the track running has helped the great man...

    That quote is slightly incorrect.

8 men have run under 2.06 so far in 2009, not 2.05.

    World leading times

    Still very impressive though!

Yeah - I thought that too - but he says "2:05 or better". For some reason with marathon times people tend to round down and this is acceptable - understandably! So if you run 3:00:59 it's okay to tell your mates you ran 3:00.
