Just looking for some info - A client of mine does alot of email marketing and currently they host their email database online with an online marketing company.
The database is unencrypted and my customer is worried incase someone hacked into the marketing companys server and stole their database - now i have spoke to 2 or 3 other online marketing companies and they are seem to run the same setup.

I am wondering how do bank's or state companies deal with database for email marketing? Or do banks do any email marketing ?

I've never had an email offering services from a bank. Not saying they dont exist but i would assume that most people would (rightly) think that it was junk mail and the bank may not want to damage their online image.

As for unencrypted DB on the internets; I hope to god you people dont have my data in it, its probably been hacked already.

I would imagine banks and state bodies would use their own servers.

if your data is in the hands of an online service then they obey their local data protection laws, they might obey the laws of your country too.

IIRC The US airlines have used security data gathered for flights into the US for marketing purposes, something totally illegal in the EU. Speaking of which there are different spam laws here and in the US, which laws will the online people adhere to ?

yes banks do send spam BUT the rise in the level of phishing means they should reduce it as they are constantly warning about unsolicited messages pretending to be from the bank

how come you never responded to your post about Ritz getting fined 60K? ;)

oh, i'm not insinuating you work for a bank or send spam, not at all..
just curious to what your interest in it is. :)

They have a duty to the people who gave permission for their emails to be used for marketting to protect their emails adresses for misuse, if they knowingly suspect that the information maybe easily disclosed they should attempt through due diligence to secure the information.
That would be my interpreation, but they should really get legal advice if they are worried.
