What's the 'current climate' got to do with being a cheapskate?
The dominant influence on Ireland's climate is the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, Ireland does not suffer from the extremes of temperature experienced by many other countries at similar latitude.

Average annual temperature is about 9 °C. In the middle and east of the country temperatures tend to be somewhat more extreme than in other parts of the country. For example, summer mean daily maximum is about 19 °C and winter mean daily minimum is about 2.5 °C in these areas.

Mean annual windspeed varies between about 4 m/sec in the east midlands and 7 m/sec in the northwest. Strong winds tend to be more frequent in winter than in summer. Sunshine duration is highest in the southeast of the country. Average rainfall varies between about 800 and 2,800mm.

With southwesterly winds from the Atlantic dominating, rainfall figures are highest in the northwest, west and southwest of the country, especially over the higher ground. Rainfall accumulation tends to be highest in winter and lowest in early summer.

The annual number of days with more than 1 mm of rain varies between about 150 in the drier parts and over 200 in the wetter parts of the country. Met Éireann has station data, dating back to the 19th century, for a number of stations.

The diagram below shows the mean annual temperature for one of them (Malin Head) expressed as the departure from the 1961 to 1990 normal in degrees Celsius. The black line is the average of the 15 year period centred on the year in question.

If we banned birthdays then we'd never get older.
If we never get older we'd never have to retire.
If we never retire then we won't need a pension.

Hurrah! You've solved the pension levy issue.

    You Sir have my vote!

I hate giving people money for there birthday. Like wise with a voucher. Its very impersonal. I like to give the person a gift. Also when giving a gift they dont know how much it cost. It could have been a tennor.

But if you put a tennor in a card and gave to your mate for there birthday you will look like a chaep skate. Just get a present that looks nice for cheapy!

start giving people 'home-made-gifts' cheap and clever.

The less money we have, the more we should celebrate! Life is too short to be miserable, too.

Birthday cards are pointless, they only thing that matters is how much money there is inside it! :D

Give me money people and lots of it, feck this 'nice gift' lark, chances are I don't want it and will throw it away or sell it the minute your back is turned. Don't make me go to that effort!

Giving me money allows me the freedom to choose exactly what I want instead of a book or game I already own or just don't want.

I'd rather a measly tenner than some piece of crap that cost a tenner and I'll only be able to sell for a fiver if at all!

    Grrr!

[EDIT: Ross Mahon, you are my kind of people buddy!] :D

Not everyone expects an elaborate birthday present from all there friends and family. Thats just being a spoilt git. Once ya get past 21 you shouldn't really expect mad presents or in your case large amounts of money. Im also guessing your not a "its the thought that counts" kinda person are ya ??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 553 ✭✭✭Futurism

No they shouldn't. I didn't get anything for my 18th recently and wouldn't inflict that upon someone else.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 280 ✭✭Ziggurat

I, for one, refuse to relinquish what joy and whimsy there is left in my life. Sure, things are bad now but making yourself miserable isn't going to help and making others miserable will just earn you their scorn.

Hell no! The 'it's the thought that counts' people were obviously never a 10 year old boy whose auntie gave him a 'True Blue' tape by Madonna when all he wanted was a Han Solo figure  If they had been that boy, they would know that it sure as hell isn't the thought that counts!

I don't expect an elaborate gift from anyone! Cold, hard cash is not elaborate, in fact it's very simple, you just open your wallet, empty it into an envelope (or my cupped hands) and hey presto, present done and dusted.

Elaborate is thinking hard about what you think that person wants, searching high and low to find it, buying it, wrapping it and presenting it to that person. No thanks, I don't want my friends going to all that effort for me, I'm not that selfish! I'm a nice guy saving them all that time by just saying 'Gimme cash, now!' and toddling off to buy exactly what I want :) Some people expect all their friends to dance attendance to them and go through such rituals, not me, I'm great like that :)

EDIT: 'Large amounts of money?' I did say I'd be happy with a tenner! Hardly a lot. The 'lots of it' bit from earlier was in reference to the combined total of all monies from my friends, if they all gave me a tenner I'd be chuffed but if any gave me some ornamental crystal that I couldn't sell quickly for at least a tenner I'd be annoyed and would most likely keep it, wrap it up and give it back to them for their next birthday. See how you like it! :pac:

Wtf, I thought everyone spelt it tenner. Is it a type of special, musical tenner?

Horses are counted as being a year older each jan 1st, hence people prefer mares to foal in spring, rather than a foal born in Nov suddenly being a year old in the following January.

Birthdays suck, they only mean that you're another year closer to being old and feeble.

My dad refuses to celebrate birthdays. His logic is that you die when you run out of birthdays. So, birthdays are not to be celebrated ;)

I don't think they should be banned but I do think we should have a single celebration for everyone. Mayday or something, give us another public holiday for it and it'd be great.
I think I read something like that when I was a kid and the idea stuck with me since.
