What fun stuff can I do with a PSP ?

I've a PSP here in the house and it's never been used . And I wanna make some use of it.

So what can this thing do ? Am I able to put MPG videos on it ?

Can anyone recommend some games and/or films worth getting on UMD ?
I see a few shops have some of them on sale (are they being deleted or just gone down in price?).

    Cheers:)

The best thing you can do with it is to put custom firmware on it to play emulators and homebrew. I don't think it officially plays mpegs but you could convert them to mp4.

UMDs are dead as a movie format, don't bother! As for games, there are plenty to recommend (depending on what genre you like):

Action/RPG: FF7 Crisis Core, God of War, Metal Gear
    Strategy/RPG: Jeanne D'Arc
    Platform: Loco Roco
    Rhythm action: Patapon
    FPS: Resistance
    Sandbox: Grand Theft Auto

And then there's PS1 games too!

I couldn't recommend Crisis Core, thought it was boring and daft in equal measure.

I'd also recommend the wipeout games, Lumines and Castlevania.

And try and get custom firmware on it, you can do so much with it including emulators and playing any PS1 game on it (as long as there isn't disc swapping without a saving).

Trawl eBay for some great games at cheap prices.
Get a decent sized memory card and you can fill it up with movies, music and pictures.
Downloads some software to convert video files to a suitable format.
Do you have a PS3? The two can link up. While a novelty it can be fun.
It has an internet radio option if you use recent firmware.

Ah deadly, emulators... no idea how to do that but if I could get Sonic on it that'd be great :D

How come UMDs are gone ?

I read a review of one of the Wipeouts and it sounded good. What about this Syphon Filter Dark Mirror game ?

Nup. No PS3 but I've a slim PS2 here though.

Is there an idiots/dummies guide to this downloadin/uploadin software business ? I'm rubbish at this stuff :(

The software I've linked too is pretty straight forward to use. Browse for your videos to convert and then select a folder where you want the new file to be located.

Havent they got around that now by combining the files into a single eboot?

Turn it into an ebook reader with Bookr.
    http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=147707
(jump on to #bookz on efnet and you have pretty much every book ever written)

Convert some videos to watch on it with PSP Video Converter
    http://pspvc.nswardh.com/

Use it for youtube/portable porn from all your favourite sites
    http://www.dcemu.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=197278

Put aircrack on it and go around cracking WEP networks
    http://psp.wijou.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=815

Turn it into a drum machine
    http://jum.pdroms.de/

Use it as an LCD status panel for your PC
    http://hackaday.com/2009/03/30/psp-as-a-status-monitor/

Install Opera Mini on it, viola proper interweb
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/forums/f133/tutorial-how-to-put-opera-mini-on-your-t235521/

Turn it into a pocket translator/dictionary
    http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=147313

    Use google maps on it
    http://royale.zerezo.com/psp/

Use it as a universal remote control
    http://www.psp-hacks.com/2006/01/31/psp-universal-remote/

Use it as an additional monitor in Windows
    http://jjs.at/software/pspdisp.html

The games are for this system are rubbish. Youll need to get some custom firmware on there to use any of the above.

Yes they have, as of CFW 3.71 I think it was. I have a perfectly functioning FFVII and MGS1 eboots on my PSP. :D

Nice one, bit late for me though. Wanted to play Koudelka on the PSP but just ended up paying over the odds for it and ended up hating the game :)

Nice list of programs as well, going to give the drum machine a go.

Theres an unbelievable amount of stuff you can do with custom firmware. Much better than those crappy ipod touch apps(well most of them, some are pretty nice though)

    Emulators,
    Gps,
    Instant Messaging,
You can even install linux or a moderately usable version of windows 95 (Hooray?)

Does anyone know anything about iRShell for 5.00 m33. I've downloaded it and was wondering does this replace my firmware or is it just a program that you can switch to. What i'm actually looking for is a universal remote but i can't get it to work!

Why buy a DSi? A second hand DS would be better tbh. Who needs dual cameras?

What do I need to do to watch .m4v files on my PSP?

I downloaded a couple of movies in this format and while I can copy them to the memory stick, I cannot see them on the PSP (I can see them on the PSP using Windows Explorer).

Do I need additional software or a firmware upgrade?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,727 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Thinking of getting one myself soon enough. I have a bunch of of those one4all vouchers from Xmas so I would be hoping to get it in Argos, Golden Discs, DID or HN.

On the Argos site though I see they only appear to have the 3000 which I on't want cos I want to play PS1 games on it.

Is there anything the PHAT can do that the 2000 can't btw?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,406 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Just the ease of hacking it really. The 2000 actually has more features like video out and the extra ram for the browser.

There will be a full hack for the 3000 pretty soon I'm guessing, which will allow custom firmware and thus ps1 games.

The only thing the phat can do which the slim can't is infrared remote apps. They dropped the ir in later models

Yes you will need to install custom firmware to play psp games. Unless you wanna download games legitemately from PSN, however they have a poor selection. There are a million tutorials online to show you how to install custom firmware (pspupdates, psp-hacks, youtube etc etc)

No luck finding a new 2000 in town today.

I tried Remote Play out a few months back. As much as I can't see it being any use to me, I have to say it was impressive turning the PS3 on and browsing the games with the PSP via the net.

I haven't read anything on Dark-Alex about any new release, so I don't think it has been hacked yet. QJupdates is pretty good for this kind of news.

Unless you're asking because you're trying to play a game that requires firmware 5.50? Do you know how to edit your 'version.txt' file on flash0?

    Nope didn't know that

Okay right you need to boot your PSP into recovery mode, and then set the 'Toggle USB' connection to access 'flash0'. Once you've done that exit recovery mode to restart the PSP and then connect it via USB to your PC. Access flash0/vsh/etc and edit your version.txt file to read 5.50.

I just read on QJupdates that the PSP 3000 has been hacked, heh! Although there is a catch -

I think what they mean for you to do is to just never let the PSP power down, just always put it into standby mode. Standby doesn't consume your battery that fast really - a fully charged PSP could stay in standby mode for weeks but yeah it's kind of a big catch. Whether they'll be able to work around this at some point I don't know, they probably will at some point.

Yep I've logged on many a time, I've even purchased stuff from my CFW PSP. I doubt they'd ban you, I don't think there's a way for them to know you're running CFW. With the obscene amount I've spent on the PSN over the past year I dount they'd want to ban me anyway. :pac:

    *cracks knuckles*
    • You can make 'Eboots' of your PS1 games to play on your PSP
    • You can use your PSP to run homebrew programs, such as an instant messenger and YouTube viewer
    • You can run Homebrew games, like my personal favourite PSP Revolution
    • You can rip your UMDs to your memory stick, reducing load times and increasing battery life
    • A CFW PSP can emulate almost every console from the PS1 era and earlier - NES, SNES, Megadrive, C64 - there's even a Saturn and N64 emulator in alpha release
    • You can customise your PSP with different game boot screens and menu sounds

I don't even think he'd have to do that. With the new HEN .tiff exploit he should be able to hack his PSP using that and load the GEN-A CFW. I'm pretty sure that the catch associated with HEN (having to re-hack it after every time it shuts down) only applies to the 3000. I haven't tried this method yet though so I don't know how effective and easy it is to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

Can you hack the 3000, yeah? I wonder if they will eventually hack the PSP Go. I'd probably get one then. I love Sony, but I pump enough cash into their Tv's, Phones and other consoles :) I'm allowed a little naughty.

Defo worth €23. I think its still around the €40 mark in the high street.

I hacked noodler's PSP 2000 yesterday without using a Pandora battery :D I updated the PSP to OFW 5.03 and then I used the Chick-HEN .tiff exploit. Then I ran PSP ident to check if he had the right motherboard. Then I ran the Hellcats Recovery tool to load CFW 5.00 M33-4 on it and then finally updated it to 5.00 M33-6. :D

Lexar sticks are fine, they get a hard rap in some places due to the amount of fake ones on eBay but the cards from MyMemory are legit.
