    Hi,

I broke my 5th metatarsal on friday (dancing to Footloose would you believe!) and i also badly sprained my ankle. The break is a complete mid-shaft break. I have been put in a backslab and will be put in a proper cast tomorrow. It is drving me up the wall already with the amount of inactivity i have. I've been told i'll have the cast on for 6 weeks and must not put any weight on it during this time. Has anyone experienced this break and how long did it take for you to recover from?

    Cheers. :)

Broke mine last June. It snapped diagonally from the toe about half way down. Was quite painful at first, but pain was very managable for the 5 weeks I had a boot. I wasn't put in a cast at all so it was grand for sleeping and showering. Just used a chair in the shower and slept with my leg elevated at night. After about 5 weeks I could start to walk and drive again. But my muscles were in bits for ages after. I can still move a load of my toes indepenantly. And I still experience quite a bit of discomfort when jogging, or playing footy.

On the flip side a buddy of mine slipped in dog sh1t and broke his 5th metatarsal and he threw away the boot after 3 weeks and strolled on. So I guess it depends on the person. He's quite a big lad too and I'm tiny. Personally I put my break down to corticosteroids I've used for hayfever for the last few years, but that's probably just paranoia and misinformation on my part.

Cheers for your reply. I am going to see the ortopedic specialist tomorrow so will see if he thinks the boot is an option for me as it seems to allow alot more freedom. At least my story aint as bad as dog sh*t although Kevin Bacon has alot to answer for. cheers again.
