Renting regular car for wedding. Help!!!

My sister is getting ,married in august and with the whole recession thing going on she wants to save a few bob where possible.

She wants to rent a decent car that will look good and be able to travel 50 miles without breaking down. She was thinking of just renting a nice BMW/Merc/Audi/Lexus from a garage. Maybe a coupe or something that looked kinda classy without looking tacky. It should be cheaper and by me driving it would cut out the chauffeur.

    Anyway my questions are:

Does anybody have any ideas of what kind of car to go for?

And where could you rent such a model for a couple of days in the galway area?

Well not a coupe, unless you want the Bride or Groom climbing into the back.

Hertz is your best bet. Their high end stuff would be classy enough. Jags, Mercs, BMWs, Range-Rover etc.
To make it cheaper, you can transfer your own insurance onto the car for the duration. Give them a buzz and see what they can do (or call into them) I assume they have an office at Galway airport. Look up the website to double check

    Good point about the coupe!

The main problem I'm having is that the car hire companies don't really offer high end stuff and the proper wedding car rental places have really flashy stuff that cost a fortune and supply their own chauffeur.

I used to work for a rival rental company. Hertz do Merc E/S-classes, Jag XK/XJ, BMW 5/7 series and X5's, so their high end stuff is pretty good.

EDIT just to let you know, you can only book a class of car, not a specific model. You can request anything but your not guaranteed to get exactly what you book. Also, most companies have an over-30's policy for renting this kinda stuff but they may waive it if your under 30 but your transerring your insurance

Id get one of the following:

    Audi A8,
    S Class Merc,
    jaguar XJ,
    Lexus LS (& possibly GS)
    CLS Merc

Try some car dealers, alot of them do a hire service and Im sure they would like to make a few quid off the expensive stuff sitting on forecourt.

i would have a chat with one of the more well off taxi drivers and see what they would charge to being you to the church and to the reception.

gives them a day off scouring the streets and you will get your class car.

ie one of the guys driving the S class mercs, or the chrysler 300c (sp) or similar.

I rented a merc for our wedding, just a normal nice car. With driver was about 300. Ring around, it's not all those old cars they have in wedding car places.

I'd be surprised if you didn't have a friend of a friend who works in a dealer who can borrow a car for you.
If I were you I'd check your contacts/Facebook and see if there's anyone who can hook you up.

I rented two Mercs from AVIS for my wedding. I rented them in my mates names and they collected them from the rental depot and I paid for them. I got 2 cars for my wedding cheap and my mates were delighted to have Mercs for the weekend!

Hi there we hired a merc from one of the rentals forget what the model was but as a bride my priority was would you be able to get in and out of the car with a dress easily and enough space for the dress (and trail if there is one)

I just borrowed from friends, I was looking for a 7 series at the time. I ended up being able to get 3 of them! Scour your list of friends, you'd be surprised what you might turn up.
Got a 730, M5 & a couple of other 5 series in the end. Was offered a 6 series, new X5 & a few other nice buses in the end. And best of all, all for free!
Failing that go for a nice rental. The bride & groom could drop the car to the airport as they head off on honeymoon.

A family member of mine has too done this before. It worked out great and her friends felt very important by being asked to do it!

Buying your mates a few drinks for the favour is a lot cheaper than having to rent and pay for a driver!
