Very basic question

Sorry for coming on asking a really really basic question.

I have a couple of different USB memory sticks and an external hard drive. Sometimes they work fine, but other times the PC doesn't seem to recognize them - they don't appear in My Computer. Although the little 'safe to eject hardware' icon does appear. And there doesn't seem to be a pattern - some days it's fine, others it isn't.

I've tried the various USB ports on the computer, and again I can't see a pattern. Thye all seem to work fine on the laptop.

I've googled and found various threads, but to be honest I don't understand the instructions half the time.

Any very simple things I can do to sort it out?!?!

    Thanks

If you right click my computer, properties and hardware tab then device manager. Have a look down the list when it doesn't seem to be working and see if there are any drivers not installed.

Sometimes i find myself if i kind of half push it in or push it in slowly or kind of push it in and out and in again kind of thing it can get confused and not properly recognize
Just make sure its in all the way and its pushed in firmly and fast. On the note of drivers sometimes if you plug an application into a different port then it's normally in it can need to do a fresh install of the driver and the driver may take a while to come up. try just giving it a min to come up or under device settings right click the top little computer icon and click scan for hardware changes. Let me know what happens

Thanjks very much for all that, I'll try what you say.

I think the thing you say about plugging it in to different ports different times might be the problem, I'll check that out.

From your desktop right click on my computer and go to manage. When the screen appears go to Disk Management. Check in there for your USB/External HD with no letter assigned. Right click it and give it another letter. Sometimes when you plug a usb device in it tries to take a drive letter that has already been taken and therefore won't show in My Computer.
