Don't know if you've reached my age yet, but if so you'll probably notice the effect of 'spending the first half of you life making your habits, and the second half practicing them' scenario kicking in.

I used to get a new album every week, but havent got anything now in a year and a half apart from Wilco and Neil Young.

Having got a flavour of my taste, are u young folk making any decent music these days, and if so maybe you'd care to share some suggestions?

well if you're in your 30s, you'll remember swervedriver, so get former lead singer Adam Franklin's solo album, "spent bullets"

Bon Iver - For Emma is one of my favourite albums of the last two years or so. Elliott Smith's XO is also up there for me. Neither of these are that similar to NY/Wilco but they are very solid albums. And if you haven't gotten Aligator or The Boxer by The National i'd say make one of them your next purchase.

Beaten to it here, i'd also throw in Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers from the same band.

Maybe if you sign up to Last.fm - you can get recommendations and find new music based on what you already listen to.

Some good Neil Young type acts at the moment are:

Chad VanGaalen // canadian multi-instrumentalist who's got a fine sweet voice and a range of folky and rock sounds. check out his Soft Airplane from last year

Woods // san fran based folk/rock/psyche band, lots of NY type sweet vocal croons and sprawling electric guitars, with a bit of a rough garagey edge

More than anything though I'd say try some Vetiver, another great US band making gorgeous americana folk/bluesy rock, a very mellow and timeless quality to their music. Best starting point is probably their 2nd album 'To Find Me Gone'.

Also I echo the above mentions of Fleet Foxes, The National and The Tallest Man on Earth (though he's a bit too similar to Dylan at times). The Decemberists I'm not as keen on, many good songs but I think their albums are rather repetitive.

And finally on the home front the likes of Adrian Crowley, Spook of the 13th Lock, Heathers and new band Villagers.

i'd recommend elbow's Leaders of the Free World before seldom seen kid. though they've not done anything i've not loved, so anything elbow is good.

Clearlake are another great band. anything by them is also fantastic.

'Sky Larkin' are pretty good. I saw them opening for Stereolab last year. Their album is called 'The Golden Spike. They're from Leeds, I think.

You should also check out 'The Con' by Tegan and Sara which was released in 2007.

I'm even older than the OP (late thirties :( ) and disagree with this post... plenty of good stuff around these days if you look for it. People have been saying "there's nothing new" for as long as I can remember! I think each generation thinks it all ended with them ...

To the OP I'm not much of a fan of the Wilco/Neil Young genre but you might like Philip Morrow?

You're not a fan of the Neil Young genre, yet your username is taken from the title of Neil Young song?

I'm of the same vintage as yourself - a bit older in fact and I can heartily recommend the following as being of both quality and substance:

    Arcade Fire - Funeral
    (A stunning achievement)

    Anything by the National
    (fantastic live band too)

I reckon you would seriously dig Iron and Wine - especially 'Our Endless Numbered Days'

    Fleet Foxes

    Bon Iver

    Tallest Man on Earth

and a stunning album from Midlake called 'The Trials of Van Occupanther'

    Enjoy re-discovering great music!

Good point, in a similar vein someone i work with was once raving about how crap the neil young cover of cinammon girl was... needless to say i had a good chuckle to myself..

I heartily endorse this event/product. Gorgeous album - I once spent an entire summer listening to that record while commuting/working/eating/resting/partying/sleeping/thinking/air banjoing

    Just lovely stuff

LOL, I knew someone was going to pull me up on that :) Yes I like Neil himself (mostly), and I love that song ... but I find most of the bands that he inspired kind of dull.

    what a fantastic sweeping generalisation!

Well, forgive me if I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread by going into excruciating detail about it. If you do, though, knock yourself out.

I am in my late 30's ,,,but still feel the same about hunting out new music as I did in my early teens.

Us older folk did not have the wonder of the "Internet" to provide us with new and wonderful sounds from around the world in an instant.Only now can I get my hands on some of the music that I spent years in secondhand record stores looking for.

They day I stop looking for new music will be the day I die.

Came across Mr Beam a couple of weeks ago. Trapeze Swinger really is something.

    Five for starters:

    DM Stith - Heavy Ghost
Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
Noah & the Whale - Peaceful, the World Lays me Down
    Miracle Fortress - Five Roses
    Blitzen Trapper - Furr

Some of the previous suggestions (the National, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver) all get the thumbs up aswell. Enjoy

You should listen to 'Everything Is Average Nowadays' by the Kaiser Chiefs - so true.

If you're into the folk rock thing try out some Ani Difranco, Nick Drake, Arcade Fire's 'Funeral', anything by Tom Waits.
I'm in the same peer group. Why worry about what's new or old..if you keep your ears open you'll hear what you like. I like where Paul McLoone is coming from on Today Fm 7-10.
Young and Leonard Cohen this summer..I'm spoilt!

Here's one of my favourites from them ......

On the more country-rock side you might like Drive by Truckers.
Also Steve Earle just released an album of Townes Van Zandt covers that's well worth checking out.

Can't help but notice that people are recommending music that is chronologically new but is generally pretty conservative sounding.

The young generation is making good music that doesn't sound exactly like older generations' music too just so you know OP

Someone said Chad VanGaalen - he produced an album by a band from Calgary I think are way more interesting and new, called Women (on Jagjaguwar if you're having troubling Googling).

Deerhoof have also made about five consecutive fantastic albums.

    Just for starters.

anyone mention phosphorescent yet - pride is great album and some of the stuff off the earlier albums (south of the border, lost my name) are as good as anything i've heard in years.

Wilco and Neil Young is good. You may like Hayes Carll's new album, it's called Trouble in Mind. It's more country than contemporary Wilco, but still quite rocking.
