I’ve played a few times and practised a bit recently after a good while away from the game.
Yesterday I was hitting my irons brilliantly as I have nearly every round I’ve played lately.
My woods are a completely different kettle of fish though.

With my irons I tend to play the ball back in my stance, take a ¾ backswing and just hit. That gives me a low-ish right to left ball flight, that I’m perfectly happy with.
When I tee up the driver (off the left heel) I’ll probably sky two or three a round (with the marks on my driver to prove it), and have a tendency to leak shots right – something I rarely do with my irons.
When I hit fairway woods I’m again very inconsistent. I’ll hit one perfectly, the next will skittle along the ground, and I’ll duff the next.

I’m going insane. Why am I so consistent with irons but struggle so badly with woods? Does anyone else have this problem. In particular, I know that skying the ball is something I always used to do as a teenager. No matter how low I tee the ball, I’ll find a way under it. Anyone have any tips to transfer my good iron play to woods? Does your swing change when you hit Drivers from when you hit mid-irons?

i just returned to the game too after a decade, have been playin over 2 months now and was finding it difficult to be consistant with my irons (especially on a soft or sandy fairway), as i was taking big chunks of divots with me... at least half the shots were poorly hit, but i never lost my short game, so i was able to keep decent scores...

with regards my fairway woods, i was inconsistant too, and from the tee i was slicing or fading at least 70% of shots.. so, i went to a pro, and he sorted me out in 2mins... basically, i had a very good shoulder and arm turn, but i wasnt using my hips and legs enough, so he got me to sit back in my stance a bit more, and it got a lot better, then i took a wider stance on the tee, and everything is dead straight now off the tee. my iron hitting consistency this last week has jumped up to about 90% at least..

a simple look at my swing from someone in the know, and aimple instruction from a very able pro made a huge difference... prior to this i was changing bits n bobs myself, not really fixing the problem at source !

so, if you can get a good pro, you can make a big difference..

i paid 25€ for 30mins, got 2 sets of golf balls to hit in the range, and my game is back :D

sounds like you are hitting down on the ball with your driver. While this is possible (and some recommend it) with fairway woods you cannot do it from the tee.

Make sure that on your backswing you are taking the club back low and slow. Drag it back along the ground until you would have to sway to keep it on the ground. The ball is swept off the tee *after* the bottom of your swing. You are hitting it at the bottom or before thus skying it.

with newer drivers (anything with a big head) at least half of the ball should be visible above the club head when its teed up. Dont try to fix skying it by teeing it lower. Having your driver teed up to low helps to slice it.

But as above, get a lesson.

i have had alot of trouble with my driver, one tip is to play the driver off your front toe, and make sure you follow thru, do not quit on it, i have a short backwsing so rely on my follow thru, if you practice these two tips i guarntee you will hit the ball more effectivly,
