Facing disc mounts?

    How are ye now?

Just about finished building up my new Pace frame. It's beauty makes my eyes bleed. However, I just brought it into cyclelogical to get the disc mounts faced but they don't do it. Can anyone give opinions on whether or not it is essential and which shops do it.

    Cheers.

I'd just use a good file to remove any paint from the brake mounts. For Avid brakes using CPS alignment system, it is definitely not required to have them faced.

For other brakes, if you get squealing or uneven pad wear or visible alignment problems, then get it done, otherwise don't bother. Fit the brakes first anyway.

Don't know where you can get it done - I'd be interested too.

You can fiddle about with shims to get the same result

It's not really necessary unless you're having a problem with your brakes. Isn't the Pace frame anodized? Thought the disc mount would already be faced.

If you are using direct mount IS cailpers (not Post Mount calipers with IS adapters), you will have to fiddle with shims whether your frame's mounts have been faced or not unfortunately. Not too many 08/09 brakes are direct mount any more though.

The post mount caliper with IS adapter has a lot of side to side ajustment so usually no need for shims, however not all post mount calipers have angular adjustment (like the Avids do), so the frame still needs to be faced if it is way off.

Thanks for the response fellas. I reckon I'll go ahead and fit the brakes as you suggest, see how i get on. Chances are I'll burst myself on the first drop off I come across and this conversation will be purely achedemic. Cheers.

Can I ask the noob question and what is this facing and shims? Disc brakes? like you skim a cars discs?

It's making sure the brake caliper mounts correctly onto the frame such that the rotor on the wheel is aligned with the brake pads/pistons.

So removing any imperfections on the frame mounting point. I just used a file.
