    Gents
looking for some advice... I am looking to change to a Saab 95 2.2 TiD estate... I used to have a 9000 a few years ago and regretted the day I sold it.... There are some real bargains out there at the minute. I was thinking of a 01-04 ...

Anyone have one or has anyone heard any thing nasty about them...? I searched all the websites of the day looking for their problems but nothing..!

    Thanks lads

I'd definitely look into the range of SAAB diesels. I seem to remember that the 1.9 is the FIAT one, and the one to go for. Apparently one of the SAAB diesel engines is supposed to be quite old and very rough. I do remember this being the 2.2, but there may be more than one version.

2.2 litre diesel is an old GM unit, it is noisy and unrefined. The 1.9 TiD is a Fiat multijet engine which is considered one of the best in it's class. It is light years ahead of the old 2.2 unit, more powerful, more fuel efficent and cheaper to tax too.

That's what I thought, but is there a new larger diesel engine that's better than the original one?

Edit - just had a look on parkers, and can't find another 2.2 engine, so maybe not.

Afaik Saab only have access to one diesel engine across their range and that is the 1.9 Multijet.

The 9-3 has 3 versions 120bhp(8 valve), 150bhp(16 valve) and this year the 190bhp(16 valve, twin turbo).

The current 9-5 has only the 150bhp version, the 9-5 really is outclassed by almost everything else, only having a 4 cylinder diesel engine doesn't help either. A car in this class pitched against the likes of the 5 Series or A6 needs a 6 cylinder diesel.

I seen a lovely 05 93 1.9 TiD vector sport in black at the Merlin auctionhouse on saturday. It went for €4k....! It was a nice one...! 150bhp with all the toys and leather....! I think there was 160k kms on it...!

I wouldnt mind so much if the car has a noisey agricultural engine as long as it is reliable.....!

Never thought of the tax thing... Damn Brian Lenihan again :(

It looks like they dropped the 6 cyl 3.0 engine in the new version, so I imagine that was a dog as well.

The 1.9 FIAT engine is excellent, and quite refined. I'd really concentrate on getting that one.

Have had the 2.2 in my previous Vectra and its an o.k engine but light years behind the 150bhp 1.9 Fiat unit in my current Vectra. The 2.2 was quite torquey but noisy and agricultural. They all suffer from fuel return pipe leaks which result in very poor starting. Its easily fixed. Its a very smoky engine so expect a James Bond style smoke screen under acceleration. If you could stretch to the 150 current unit it would be a much better buy...making sure it isn't the 120bhp version which was more common in the Saab's for some reason

Yep, it would be pretty pricey especially for what you're getting (compared to a 530d for example).

Good luck with the search - I've always liked SAABs. I think they're one of the most comfortable cars around.

Also, do your sums. I'm by no means a petrolhead snob, but sometimes the savings you get from driving a diesel are not worth the premium you can pay to buy the car in the first place.
