World champ colours on frameset

I've seen a few framesets with World Champion stripes, e.g.

    03SWorksE5WCRoadFrameset_d.jpg
    Cervelo%20P3%20Carbon%20Frameset%20White%20World%20Champ.jpg
    101_crossbow.jpg

Aside from the specifics of the frames, what's the general feeling about this?

Reason I ask is that there seem to be "rules" about wearing team colours, yellow jerseys etc, and I wondered whether this extended to frames.

    (Will add poll)

Is is acceptable to ride a bike with world championship stripes? 12 votes

as far as i'm aware, as long as the manufacturer has won the world champs they can put the colours on the frame.
one of the reasons i like my bianchi frame so much!

(and i'm definately not world champion)

they are also the olympic colors - spot the connection there?

The cervélo is out there in both world champ and olympic flavour.

Saw a triatlete on one in Laragh a few weeks ago with 808 clinchers (clydesdale, naturally). That bike, under his large arse being cranked up slieve mann. So very very wrong.

    +1

I think one can wear whatever replica kit you like (at the risk of ever increasing Fredation) but the colours just gotta be earned

Does Ritchey WCS finishing kit fall into this category too?

I'd be inclined to leave that pass as it would be less an obvious use of the champions colours than them being across a frame

We all know the euro answer for this. It fine to wear them if they are yours. However at the end of the day it obvious to most of us that we will never be world champs and we will never get mistaken for being a world champ so just ride your bike regardless of what it looks like ....... I love the cervelo olympic frame.

Why on earth would u want to train on a set of zipp 808 and clinchers at that

    Because they look good?

Carbon wheels are for racing! Never under any circumstances should they be brought out on a training ride. Training wheels should be strong and heavy with lots and lots of spokes. Carbon wheels say to the group, I’m not strong enough to do this ride without my $2,000 feather weight wheels. If you have the money to tear up a carbon wheel set on the road, then you’d be better off spending it on a coach who will get you fit enough to keep up with the group ride on regular training wheels.

Better clinchers than tubs. That whole group (Wicklow Tri club I think - that's right, I'm naming and shaming :P ) were by far the blingin'est group I have ever seen sitting around in Laragh. Nearly all on 5K+ bikes with carbon wheels, mostly tri-bikes with 404s, 808s or corima tubs. They were quite a sight.

Lumen - just to give you an idea of the type of person who is wearing champion's stripes these days consider this:

    and this:

Am I getting through to you?

Those rules don't apply to triathletes. The first entry in the Tri-Catechism is: "Who likes short shorts? I like short shorts."

Forget etiquette though. Everyone knows that 808s are the best wheels for climbing Slieve Mann.

    OK, I get it.

I think my problem is that I just like stripes. I have a stripes on my cap, jersey, and one on my gilet. My "casual jersey" has a white stripe across it, as does my winter training jacket.

I like stripes like this and this.

I don't know where this comes from. The wonderful thing about stripes, is stripes are wonderful things, their tops are made out of blue, their bottoms are made out of green...

FWIW, I don't get the "don't ride on a nice bike except when you race" thing. Surely since recreational cycling is non-competitive, you should be able to ride whatever makes you happy? I would have thought that racing with Zipps makes more of a statement about desperation to succeed, unless you're right at the sharp end where a second a minute makes the difference between points. It seems like the unfortunate sort of inverse snobbery created by people (e.g. ski or surf bums) whose admirable dedication to amateur sport renders themselves unable to make a decent living.

I am in no way attempting to pre-justify the future purchase of a bike beyond my talents. No sir'ee. :D

As they say ... 'wear your stripes with pride' ...

I think it is more acceptable on a frame than on a jersey. Jersey has to be earned. My old Trek had "7 time tour winner" or something like that written on the seat tube but I didn't see it as applying to me :) Lumen- does the Mares Cross have world champ stripes by any chance?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,831 ✭✭✭ROK ON

Yep those stripes are similar to the Pride stripes. But whatever floats your boat.

I cant really comment on this, in that I am the proud owner of the new Giro pink jersey (designed by D&G, no less)
I will be wearing this jersey on a Sat spin shortly.
Christ it is really comfy and very well ventilated (and designed for an Italian summer!!!!).

@Lumen: Bike stripes are nice, but the two on your 2nd link (Bianchi and other one) are better than the 1st three.
The stripe will keep you happy, the lack of a world champs stripe will keep the Euro fascists, police happy.

Dont know what it is, but I really dont like the look of Cervelo's.

I dunno about getting bikes with very prominent world champ stripes, but I have seen some that have a very small logo with the colours. I think that is fine. Actually, I think my Spesh has em. That Ridley bike looks neat, I'd ride that.

A totally separate point about stripes... I want stripy cycling arm warmers... but I can't find them anywhere. If you see any in a shop please buy a small size for me. Thank you.

@Raam - just buy a pair of those crazy stripy long socks that couriers wear, cut off the foot part and you have arm warmers.
Not very euro, but if its what you want.

Now come on, do you really think I would do that?
Anyway, for my money, you can't get much more Euro than CSF Navigare.

Not sure - the helmet clashes with the peach colour on the jersey and shorts.:)

That's what makes it. You can't match everything. If you do, it looks like you are trying too hard.

I agree that they are possibly not the very prettiest of bikes, but form follows function; it seems that everyone who has ever ridden one agrees that they are absolutely incredible (stiffness, ride quality, and lightness), so you have to be really preoccupied with looks to pick something else at that price point.

I saw a small white R3 in Cycleogical that looked a bit nasty (not helped by the crap wheels on it) but Raam's doesn't have that problem since he's built like a giraffe.

When I first saw Cervelos on the tellybox I thought they were rank. But they grew on me. When I saw this, I was totally hooked and had to have one.

    Cervelo_R3_WhitePackage.jpg

I like it cos it's quite plain and isn't exactly bling to look at.

Yes that bike looks way nicer than the one with the WC stripes.

Do you or do you not advocate the wearing of sunglasses inside the helmet strap:D.
