GAA Forum Write Off

Hi guys, Jugs82 has suggested that we try something similar to the soccer write off competition on the GAA forum. Details on that competition are here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055429237

The idea is that a number of people volunteer to write an article on whatever GAA related subject they are interested in. These articles should be 500 - 750 words. The participants will send me the articles via PM, I will post them up so that they are anonymous. Everybody else in the forum can then read the articles and vote for their favourite. The idea is to encourage some more substantial content and also to allow posters to air their view in detail on whatever they want.

The idea of this initial thread is first to see who is interested. Second to get any suggestions on how the competition should be run, as this is he first time we have tried anything like this we are very flexible on how the contest is structured.

    Great idea.

Nice idea. One thing is that some of the more well known posters might still be recognised by their style of writing, their opinions and their areas of interest. Worth a try though.

Yeah I'll be well up for this. I was going to enter the soccer one, but I'd be far more interested in a GAA one.

Like Flukey said though, you might need to consider if we should be allowed write about something regarding our own county though. I mean, any regulars would be able to tell that a Waterford article would more than likely be written by me, or a Cork one by Orizio etc, so thats something to think about.

That shouldn't really matter tbh. It wasn't too difficult to guess which posters wrote which pieces in the soccer forum write off but at the end of the day, it all came down to the quality of the article.

I'd love to write one but wont have any time in the next 3 weeks or so with exams.

    Sounds like a great idea.

Is there a deadline for submissions or will it be a rolling time frame?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

    Count me in.

I will have to set some sort of deadline or we won't get started. So how about this Sunday for registering your interest. After that maybe 2-3 weeks to submit your piece

Yeah I'll go for it if we're getting 2-3 weeks...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

Yeah you will have a few weeks to write something. So that is 3, we need a few more, anybody else interested?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

Anybody else in or interested, 4 might be enough but I would perfer to have 6 or more.

Doesn't mentioning who is participating kill the anonymity a bit? Don't announce, just publish the articles. It would be better if nobody knew who was involved. Just PM Cruiserweight if you are interested.

But saying people are doing it means people will do it cause they wont be lonely:).

He could say how many are doing it, but not who they are. If we know the names, then it will be easier to guess what piece is written by what person. If it was completely anonymous, it would be better. From now until the closing date for entries, no names should be mentioned. There is a small enough field at present, not making it too hard to guess. The pieces themselves have less of a chance of standing out if we know or think we know who wrote them. They'll be judged on their own merits if we haven't a clue as to who has written them.

To be honest, I'm not sure how worthwhile it'd be with this small a field. The soccer one worked well because there were so many involved that (with the exception of people who wrote about something very obviously related to them), it was hard enough to guess who wrote what.

Which in turn meant that it wasn't really worth bothering to do so, which meant it stayed largely anonymous :)

Although if we do go ahead with it, I'd also urge people to try to write about something that wouldn't necessarily be easy to trace back to them (this only really applies to the heavier posters obviously).

One more participant has entered so we have 5, one more should do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

Okay we have six, that should be enough for a decent competition. I will leave it open until Sunday evening if anybody else wants to PM me to take part. Having read posts from some of the entrants, including some suprise entries, I am expecting some high quality articles

It will be pretty flexible, but it will probably be three to four weeks after this Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

Bumping the thread seems to have done the trick, we now have 7 entrants

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

Now we have 8 potential participants

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,397 ✭✭✭yahoo_moe

Sweet, figured this had died a death - but anything the Soccer forum can do... :D

Grand, I'll be going on holiday around deadline time but I'll get cracking on it soon so should have it wrapped up on time.

    Best of luck all!

I have sent a PM to everybody that expressed an interest. The deadline for me receiving the articles has been set as the 8th of June. There will be a maximum of 9 articles

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,908 ✭✭✭Daysha

Completely forgot about this! I'm gonna get cracking on mine now.
