a live cd to virus-scan a windows install?

I've tried this before with either Knoppix or ubuntu (+wubi), I can't remember which... but needless to say I was a bit lost on which scanner to use... I'm not sure if the one I ended up using was of any use.

In case I haven't explained myself well here, what I'm looking to do is scan an existing XP install outside of windows, where presumably said malware can't hide itself from the OS.

I'm not a big linux user, but I've found the live CDs excellent for easily pulling files off harddrives where the host OS is screwed before reformatting.

Is there anything out there in linux-land geared specifically for this purpose?
Or some way of building my own custom live cd, with useful utils?
Or would I be better off avoiding linux for this purpose and going with something like BartPE?

DOWNload avast antivirus ,install it.at a certain point it will say ,do you wish to do a hardrive scan on reboot, click yes.then reboot pc ,it will do a full virus scan be4 windows loads up, if the hd is 300gig, the scan could take 2hours or more.THIS is the easiest way to do a virus scan ,without loading windows os.
get the free avast antivirus home version, google avast website.

You have already mentioned Knoppix and Ubuntu. But any live CD can be used for this purpose.

Run them as a live CD and install/update an anti-virus such as clamav to the live read only environment. (assuming you have an internet connection).

If you they do detect a virus, you better off reformating the HD and doing a fresh install from your recovery discs. Not from the recovery partition that maybe infected also.

Other tools include "UBCD for windows",

    Here's a list Link

The Trinity Rescue Kit is excellent.

Second vote for Trinity Rescue Kit.
Virus scan all windows drives is even a boot time option.
It'll connect and download up to date virus databases before doing the scan too,
so you can keep the same CD handy indefinitely.
