Tyres

I recently got a new bike, which came with the standard slicks 700 x 23c (i guess they are standard anyway).

However, although I am still getting the feel for the bike and how it handles, I do feel the tyres aren't the best for grip when cornering at speed (and when I say speed, its not really that fast).

Emty did recommend the Contintental GP 4000 (thanks Emty), I have also looked at Michelin Pro 3 (Grip) and Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CX.

To be honest, having no experience with using any of these I was wondering on what others experiences have been?

Ideally I want something that grips well in dry & wet conditions (mostly be out in dry weather, wimp I know, but I use the wet weather to go fishing). Rolling resistance, etc is really immaterial as I wont be racing and dont go that fast anyway.

    In order of importance:
    1. Grip
    2. Durability (puncture resistance)
    3. Red would be a bonus.

    Thanks

    Eggie

Go for the GP4000 S series ones. probikekit.com usually has them pretty cheap. I've tried a lot of different road times and these are the ones that I keep coming back to (and have stuck at for the last year).

There are a bunch of other threads talking about this - have a search.

These would look good and be practical I reckon.

    FYP :P

4000S have served me well. Mostly.

Schwalbe Ultremos, marginally better than GP4000s in my experience. Cheaper, lighter and more puncture resistant. Grip probably similar, both are very good.

Cyclesuperstore were doing 2 Ultremos for €50 last week when I was down there. Didn't get any myself but it's a pretty good deal.

What colour? Like these in white?:)

Haha, no I think they were just the plain black ones. You were the chap with the (very nice) pinarello on saturday? While it might look sweet with the white ultremos, they will also get dull and dirty pretty quick. Plus €25 for a tyre that is retailing for more than that online is too good to turn down, it's worth a small hit to your euroness (the shoes have already pushed you up a good few notches).

    Yeah, twas me.

You might be right, plus if I cycle up to CSS they'll prob fit them while I wait too.

Like the white though, could wash them regularly, decisions.

Anyone else have white tyres before?

The Ultremos in CSS are plain black which is the best colour for a tyre. Very good deal. I was reminded of another negative while swapping my GP4000s over to Ultremos tonight- GP4000s can be an absolute nightmare to get on or off a rim. Ultremos go on really easy. This is the case with DT Swiss and Mavic rims in any case.

I was thinking of trying these tyres, anyone used them before and what do u think of them.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Vittoria_Open_Corsa_Evo_CX_Tyre/5360041779/

Used the Gp4000's before and found they do cut very easily, currently use these

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Continental_Grand_Prix_4_Season_Tyre_and_Tube_Set/5360028017/

and find them bullet proof and i mean bullet proof, only problem is Gp4's and Michelin Pro race roll a lot better

Tiny has Open Corsas I think. I don't have them myself but they get pretty glowing reviews, particularly for the ride quality. The only negative is that they are a bit pricey. Might try them myself some time.

haha, used the Vitorria ones (currently have the tub version on my 404s) and found they cut easily and went back to GP4000S tires... They did grip well and the ride quality was good.

Funny to see someone elses experience with the Four Season tires - I bought them and they lasted 3 weeks before front and rear was in the bin... Too many cuts/punctures... Guess it is the luck of the draw..

Hmmm funny that, i've used 3 sets of them now over a few yrs and found them all great, i tend to train alot over back roads which can be quiet rough and never had any cuts !
