I was recently talking to a friend who was learning first aid and to my shock I was told that CPR is now taught differently !

IE two breaths and 30 compressions.

Many moons ago, ten years or so, when I was taught, it was always two breaths and 15 compressions

Can anyone tell when this happened or im i being misled

Thanks god, ive never had to use CPR on anyone but it sounds like i need a basic course again and refresh what are clearly well outdated skills.

If I recall correctly, it was changed last year (or was it 2007?) based on AHA guidelines. Current thinking is that chest compressions are more beneficial and more time spent doing them will give an arrest patient a better chance of survival along with the other links in the chain of survival.

There is speculation it will be changed again eventually to chest compressions only, doing away with breaths. Something about there being enough residual oxygen in the body. Anyway, research is ongoing.

Above is spot on OP. Just for info it changed in 2007. Dec if im not mistaken:).

The rule for any first aid or even up to practicioner level (EMT, Para, A/P, Doctor) is do what your trained to do. If your trained for 15:2 then that is what to administer until someone higher trained takes over. That way your no going outside your remit.

    Was it early 2007.

I gave CPR to a chap on Leeson St bridge in April 2007.

When I reported back to the barracks the medic's wanted a report, I was then informed that the CPR protocols had changed and it was 2 breaths to 30 compressions.

Make scene safe.. check to see if person is ok/concious.. check for breathing.. ask someone to/ you call 112.. send someone to get a defibrillator.. 2 breaths.. 30 compressions.. ALL of this brought to you in ridiculous AHA instruction video! :D

Hehehe I'm doing a first aid course at the moment and this is what we're being told too. There is also talk of it changing to 50 compressions and 2 breaths, or even no breaths at all obviously once airway is open and unobstructed.
For now though, 30 compressions and 2 breaths. :)
