Hypothetically speaking of course, is it fair for a class to take an exam on a subject - where the lecturer of that said subject had not once, ever - taught any subject material to the class and rarely showed up?

Hypothetically if this were to happen - should the said class just study hard, and hope for a pass - or would we have a valid case against the results of the exam, if they were poor?

You can only be examined on what you have been lectured afaik. Ideally this should have been brought to the attention of the Students Union ages ago but I believe this consititues as grounds for an appeal. Ask Colm in the SU - will be the best person to advise you on it

We said it to the class rep a while back Sully - I think I posted a thread on here about it. I'm going to study as hard as I can (hypothetically of course) - and hope for the best.. but if you think that we're ok for an appeal, I will certainly do so if my results aren't the best.

You might need to appeal it now rather then later, I cant recall the procedure. If your class rep hasnt done anything about it, you can. Any student can consult with the SU regardless of their "role".

Id advise contacting Colm first and see what he would advise in a hypothetical situation like this. If you could keep us informed as it might help others if they get into a real mess. PM me if you need his number as he is sometimes down in College St. more.
