Looking to get qualified in Scuba Diving, anyone recommend a place to go and get it that's way cheaper than Ireland?

I think the cheapest place to get qualified in Oz, well certainly on the East Coast, is on Magnetic Island. I think they do the Open Water course there for c.$300 over 4 days. However, the water visibility there wouldnt be the best and the reef is just off the island. I think the pool/classroom aspect takes place in Base Hostel, facilities didn't seem the best to be honest but I knew a good few people doing it.

Better bet is to go up to Cairns and get your licence on the barrier reef. I did it with CDC, doing a 5 day liveaboard (i.e. 2 days in cairns for pool and class and then 3 days staying on their boat moored 2 hours offshore cairns in the reef). For $500 it was simply unreal. ProDive are also very well regarded up in Cairns, slightly pricier but said to be well worth it.

Don't skimp too much on getting qualified. Having proper learning facilities, dive locations and experienced instructors will make the experience much better for you and inspire greater confidence in your own abilities. Enjoy!
