Please excuse the ignorance! I'm a newbie! :o

Ok, so I have my eye on the Canon 40d as my first dslr; I have a question relating to lenses: I have a Canon 500n with a Sigma f3.5-f6.3 28-300mm lense. My question is; will this film lense work on the 40d? I'm hoping to buy body only, (hopefully) use this lense, and maybe add a 50mm lense and work with this until budgets allow for a "digital" zoom lense.

    Is this do-able? (fingers crossed)

    Thanks for any help!

I doubt it will,If you can find out the exact model of the lens(or post a picture of it) it might work,But most lenses from Sigma on film cameras won't work on digital unless they are chipped by sigma or a sigma specialist like Hahnel in cork i think..

Yeah, my dad has a 500mm Sigma that he used to use on his film cameras. We've tried using in on his 40D but it won't shoot unless it's on the widest aperature. Been told it needs to be chiped to work fully on a digital body. It might be the same with the lens you have.
