Not looking forward o the canal swim too much, kayaked that stretch before and its pretty smelly. The cycle should be nice and fast, completely flat over to Maynooth.

Contemplated entering, had a look at the canal, decided not to enter:p I'm doing Skerries instead.

I wonder do they plan to dredge it before the race, the harbour is okay but I presume from the sports club up will be pretty murky.

Still I'm sure a splash of detol in T1 and we'll be fine.

    Hi All,

Does anyone have any information on the start times for each wave. Im registered for the slow wave non drafting. I am trying to see what time ill be finished at as I have an exam in the afternoon.

Ive tried emailing the organisers but nothing..

Anyone out there got the info?

    THanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

Entered the same wave myself.. so if you find out can you post it up.

What is your estimated swim time? Hoping I won't be last out of the water :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 darrankavanagh

    hmm... im so slow..

fastest 500 ive done is 13mins

The problem I have now is the complete lack of information for the event.

I have an exam @ 1 o clock that I have to make for my taekwondo class that I cant miss. Hoping id be finished by then. Was jogging by the canal yesterday, looks a tad dirty from grass being cut, and collecting on the water..

Wonder if they'll clean it at all before the event..

Any idea of the swim route? I presume it was one way but am now thinking it will start in the harbour up 250m and back.. The harbour *should* be clear enough with all the kayaking there.

Ah very good. So its separate races - no overlap between drafting and non drafting races......... very good. much better than what I thought it would be.

    Bump, not long now.

Stopped over at the canal last night, it looks clean enough. I cannot figure out what way or where they are going to set up the transition area tho'

So how was the event from those who participated ?

    Plus:
    1. Closed roads
    2. Nice swim (despite my previous concerns about swimming in a canal)
    Negatives:
    1. Timing issues (check out the newbies thread)
    2. Were distances accurate??
    3. Transition was a disaster - the elites were allowed to rack their bikes at random so that when us mortals were racking we were asked to keep a clear space around the elite gear which really restricted space - bikes were really crammed in
    4. Having the returning elite cyclists and departing elire runners having to pass through the competitors waiting to enter the water was asking for an serious accident. As we queued to get into the canal we had to move back and forward to allow runners and cyclists pass. It would have been better to wait until all eleite athletes had started the run before allowing the next wave into the canal but I do appreciate that the organisers were probably under pressure regarding finishing the event and getting the road opened again.
I'm a bit grumpy today, thought I had posted a decent time with three pb's but questions about the length of the course have made me question that:mad:

If it makes you feel any better I don't think the swim was short. If anything it was a slow swim. I'm closer to 7 minutes for 500m and came out closer to 8 minutes.

Yeah apologies to anyone that I may have roared at when going out on the run.

Rack space was a disaster alright, i think a few people had to use the kerb and the grass bank?

I agree with the positives and the negatives about timing issues and distances. I actually thought the transition was fine. Being one of the last out of the water meant that it was quiet enough and I had plenty of space. Cycle and run courses were good and there was plenty of room for the sprint finish. I thought the marshalls were good also...

Anyone see the boardman bike with a collapsed front wheel in the ditch near the sports centre? Any idea what the story was?

Sean Collier got his front wheel lodged in a tear drop shaped pot hole at close to 50kph and went down very hard (I was right beside him when it happened). Surprised nothing was broken but he was pretty cut up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭Dowee

Was talking to this guy after the race he had a good few cuts and bruises but seemed to be ok and he said he wasn't too bad. From the state of his wheel it looks like it was a nasty fall.

I hit that pothole too, thankfully i wasnt doing anything like 50kph so i held on!!

Was there a mistake in the results or did one of the female competitors actually do the cycle in 20 mins ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

I presume she was only allowed to do half the route(took 30+ minutes for the swim?)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92 ✭✭Silent Rain

Actually I didnt even see tha one, was looking at another further up in the field thats did the cycle in under 20 mins. Probable just a few errors in the timing.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 56 ✭✭milligank

    Sean Collier = MACHINE

Thats why he was not broken.

but I'd say that was scary.....

Tunney, were you right beside him OR right behind him (getting a lift) ?

He is a machine but I can hold my own with Sean in the bike. He was 2 feet to my right when he went down, he was dropping back to let me come through and work. Talked to him tonight, he's banged up but okay.

    Interesting.

    Will I:
    a) receive nothing
    b) receive one six sizes too small
    c) actually get the right one :)

(Check your runireland account details for your address)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,034 ✭✭✭griffin100

Has anyone actually gotten their jersey yet? Mine seems to have been lost in the post:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,454 ✭✭✭mloc123

I mailed the guy on Friday and he said mine would be posted on Monday to my work address.. so I am waiting now for it. I reckon it will be too small anyway as I would have selected M on run ireland which is fine for a tshirt but not a jersey :D
