I've stayed in Vilamoura and Alvor in the Algarve... Alvor was nicer (Vilamoura a little "created"). Loved it... I travelled from one side to the other and then into Spain, it's a fabulous country (much nicer than Spain in my opinion and the people are much nicer too). I'd look out for Lagos (pronounced Lay-gosh) too, not sure about the beaches there though. Would love to go back some day.

I have been to Lisbon and then we went on up the coast to a resort called Estoril for the rest of the week. Lovely place, reasonable hotels and nice places to eat at all price ranges. There is a hige casino there if that floats your boat. Estoril itself is connected to the next 'town' called Cascais by a long seaside boardwalk thats a pleassant 15min walk. Good shopping there. A small but nice and quite and clean beach in both places. I would highly recommend and the train from Lisbon only takes 30mins or so.

algarve is fishermen and beaches and sunshine. if you want culture go to nazare area, 90 minutes north of lisbon. plenty to see, convents and palaces. obidos. world heritage site. decent weather not as good as the algarve. food in this area is cheaper and generally better than algarve. i live in the algarve (im portuguese) but come from the middle of portugal. lisbon is also filled with sites although very busy as it is the capital. i suggest a drive holiday. hope this helps.

+1 for Nazare - fantastic place and very very cheap. Also very close to some UNESCO World heritage sites such as Alcabaca and Tomar which are well worth a look.

Lisbon has terrific nightlife and it's worth staying in the city to sample this. Cascais is a nice resort near Lisbon with a decent beach. Don't miss the hill town of Sintra nearby. Didn't like Porto so much but it's worth doing a cruise on the Douro River from there.

We used public transport to get to all those places with no problems.
