I know this comes up a fair bit but does anybody know any research on ice based that is'nt just based on subjective feeling of a sample of people?

I mean I always see reports thrown up about how they took 100 people and the ones that took ice baths felt no different but is there any hard scientific research on the subject?

    Thanks.

This article refers to a study in the British Medical Journal - although is only based on a sample of 40 people.

Off topic slightly, but I tried cryotheraphy once (out of curiousity) and I got an instant boost but it was a tad claustrophobic

I tried this last year with a slight hamstring injury and found it great, a little bit cold though (-110˚C!!!!):D. The only thing was that it was a bit expensive, €50 for 3mins but it worked really well after 1 session so it was worth it!

Yeah... sounds like the Wexford one I did. But I did 3 sessions spread over about 5 hours. The first one had a novelty factor, but I was terrified of the 2nd 2 sessions. -110 degrees with just your shorts on walking around in circles in that 5 x 5 space is no joke :)

    Thanks Peckham.

Thats a pretty good article and it seems solid enough even if the sample size is pretty small.

Id still be interested in a more scientific study based on what actually happens during/after an ice bath rather than going by how the participants felt which, as the article states, is pretty subjective and limited.

If we're going by subjective feeling the 40 participants in the study may not have got any benefit but still dozens of elite athlete's swear by the ice baths for recovery.

Slogger Jogger what did the cryotheraphy entail?
