The summer tour is only 3 weeks away now. And now that we know who cant go, who should be our squad heading over? Here's my take, keeping in mind that Kidney is using this tour for development purposes (in the pack especially)

    1. Brett Wilkinson/Tom Court
    2. Sean Cronin/Denis Fogarty/Rory Best
    3. Mike Ross/Tony Buckley
    4. Ryan Caldwell
    5. Donnacha Ryan
    6. NOT Stephen Ferris
    7. David Pollock
    8. John Muldoon

    9. Eoin Reddan/Isacc Boss/Paul O'Donohoe
    10. Ian Humphries/Ian Keatley
    11. Mark McCrea/Ian Dowling
    12. Paddy Wallace/Ian Whitten
    13. Darren Cave
    14. Fionn Carr
    15. Gavin Duffy

Decent representation from each province, Trimble out due to a knee operation and Leamey might be called into the Lions squad if Quinlan gets a ban. I'd prefer to see Cronin starting ahead of Best or Fogarty in the interest of development and Gavin Duffy deserves his place at FB.

I reckon Healy, Toner and Sexton will all be involved aswell. Healy definitely will after his performances in the HC for Leinster this season.

Will be quite the feat for Stepen ferris to play for the lions and in the summer tour

No Leinster players will be involved as the tour clashes with the HEC final.

    When is the tour exactly?

    When is the tour exactly?

The first match against Canada is on the same day as the Heineken Cup final... 23rd May. I think.

Sorry, didn't realise that. It's a pity because there's a few Leinster players that really deserve Ireland caps. Still, I'm sure they would rather play in the HC final.

It is a bit of a shame. Would really like to have seen Sexton and Healy especially get some international games, but they will hopefully get a chance in the Autumn.

O'Donohoe/Keatley for 9/10 defintely imo, two of the best young prospects in the country.

I certainly like the sound of a Wallace/Cave midfield.

Absolutely. Healy and Sexton MUST be capped in the Autumn.

Johnny O'Connor anyone? Great player when on form. Deserves a bit of time in the Ireland set up again.

I'd like to see Neil Best and Roger Wilson included, both on good form with Northampton. Could argue for Downey in the center and J.Murphy on the wing tool but maybe the Churchill cup squad would be more like it for them.

Trouble is Best and Wilson will be playing in the Challenge Cup final with Northampton and will be unavailable for the tour.

The press is starting to look a bit bare for this tour between the Lions and the various finals.

When does the A-Team for the Churchill Cup get picked?

Nothing would have made me type squad.

I mean, with the Lions gone, Leinster busy, Northampton busy, possibly Leicester, there's not going to be a huge pool of players available.

The Leinster players will be free for the Churchill Cup. Its the full internationals against USA and Canada that are the problem!

Gary Brown? He's kinda old but there aren't many other options unless they play someone really young.

i would however!!! i still cant see Johne Murphy getting a call up. would have thaught he would have made the A team for the 6 nations and he didnt so not quite sure what the guy has to do. And he made some stupid mistakes yesterday and Dowling is a regular starter for munster so thats why i chose him. However i wouldnt mind either way.

Johne Murphy can come so long as he doesn't play for more than 60 minutes. From what I saw yesterday it seems like he just crumbles after that point.

Il assume this would be your Church hill cup team as most of those cant play. and Cave can only play 13..I wouldnt have him in the team atal unless he starts, hes not a utility back like Earls would be.

Cave has played at 12 numerous times at underage level and is suited to that position. Agreed 13 is his strongest position but to say he can only play 13 is wrong.

Who else would you have at 12? Cave has played 12 before. Wallace and Darcy are getting on so one of Cave or McFadden could end up playing 12 for Ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 108 ✭✭Moncti48

Ive watch Cave alot and i feel he is better suited to 13 and will in my view be the next 13 for Ireland(Earls for me is not a 13)

Also i think Matthews right now i a better option, i no hes 26 but he has played alongside Cave before and they worked ok.

For the moment maybe. Though McFadden has also played at 12 a bit. Just Matthews is hardly one for the future and 12 is a position we're struggling for replacements in.

They might try Downey at 12 in one of the Churchill games.

We will probably get 2 more years out of Darcy/Wallace fighting for the 12 shirt. both are 29/30 so will say 2 years! as bad as THP is 2 find a replacement 12 could be a bigger problem. McFadden/Cave 2 13's one of them playing 12
sounds like BOD and Darcy(one can only imgine if it worked that well) but would prefer to see a proper 12 come through the ranks. however theres a difference between me saying that and it actually happening!!

I imagine the CC squad and full touring squad will be quite similar to be honest. Some older players will head home and some Leinster players will fly over, but there will be a lot of overlap.
