So my 89 year old grandmother was admitted to hospital tonight with pneumonia. Just in the door after getting her settled in. She had been sick with the flu over the last few days but was in extreme pain tonight. Turns out she has fluid in her lungs and a possible clot. We called care doc who barely looked over her and recommended she wait until Tuesday to see her doctor. Refused to give her painkillers as she had took panadol earlier on in the night, despite her asking for something for the pain.

Hospital staff often get a knocking and iv had case to raise concerns about them before. But tonight, I have to hand it to the A&E staff in Ardkeen. Straight away they attended to her, monitored her heart, gave oxygen, took bloods and gave an x ray. Kept a close eye on her until they found a room in a ward. Were in helping us making her comfortable. The nurses in the ward she is now are also very friendly. They also said we made the right decision bringing her in, as if we waited, things could be a lot worse. Luckily, A&E was quiet tonight.

So, thanks to all those who helped out. A great bunch. I think its always good to report good cases of hospital care instead of the usual negativity. Now all is left is hope that she gets better and back to her old self. Fingers crossed anyway.

Thanks for this story. We hear so much negativity about the A&E waits and 30 people waiting on stretchers. It is great to hear when the system works.

Living in Waterford and being part of a large (and aging) family I have some experience of Ardkeen hospital -- I was treated there after and accident, my wife was treated there for a serious chest infection, and my sister in law and my mother both dies there. I could not praise the staff there enough for their caring, fast and highly professional response, and their general approach to hygiene. I agree we all get the bad stories in the press and never the good ones. These people do the very best they can within the shambles that Mary Harney, Professor Drumm, and his management have created.

Hope your gran makes a good and speedy recovery and thanks for the kind words.

I worked in an A&E in dublin and know how hard it is - bad for the staff and 10 times worse for the normal sick people sitting in the waiting room next to maggots.
