Not sure if this is the right place to post this query but here goes. Relation of mine lost licence recently for 3 years for drinking & driving. Only heard this week that the a**hole is still driving “occasionally”. Seemingly he said that of course he’ll have to drive from time to time……how else is he to get around.
When he’s caught, what’s the likely outcome?

if caught - car confiscated ....possible jail time, heavy fine and off the road for longer.

how can he get insurance if he's "officially" off the road ? even when he is allowed back on the road his insurance will be through the roof.

No insurance and no drivers licence are the two big ones at the top of a list of about 10 summons.

    Depending on the judge €2000 - €4000 fine, disqualified for 6 years and def prison, 2 - 4 months:D

    Might be a bit harsh

But you could always contact the local station and tell them your about your relitive.

If he crashs and hurts someone, or worse, kills someone, could you live with not doing something to stop him driving.

not a nice idea I know but its a matter for you to decide

Thanks for the replies.......exactly as I suspected.

Hedges.....as for your suggestion on reporting him to local station, I wouldn't necessarily consider that being a bit harsh. If I had any suspicion of him drinking & driving again, I'd have no hesitation in reporting him. As for reporting him for driving while banned.......hopefully sense will prevail and this will not be necessary but I have my doubts.

I'd file a complaint. At the very least you might be able to get a Gard to call around to him and give him a good scaring about driving unlicensed and uninsured.

he may still be insured .....

I was reading the post again - he's recently been in court - meaning he may not have told his insurance company that he's been disqualified.

Either way .... I think you should make the gardai know about it ..... he must deal with the consequences of his action properly, use public transport, get a cab, ask a friend for a spin..... HE'S BREAKING THE LAW !!!

He's off the road for a reason - and he's told to stay off the road (as punishment) .... its like a kid breaking a window by kicking a game of ball in the street (using driveway as goalposts) .... getting told not to use the house as a goal and going back to do it again ...honestly !!!

  • Call over to him

"As you're banned from driving, I was wondering could I have a loan of your car for the next, hmmm, 3 years? Since you wont be able to use it? Sure call me for a lift sometime if you're stuck"

It doesnt matter if he has informed them. If he is disqualified from driving then is is unable to be insured, by law. Hence all insurance policies for MPVs are null and void.

My advice OP is contact local station. Remember folks he could have appealed the conviction and be awaiting a circuit court date. Only way to find out is report it.
