Best broadband for PS3 in a rural enough area

Live in an area of west Donegal with about 1000 residents. We got broadband a year ago and currently receive 1mb d/l speed from Eircom. Tried to connect my PS3 to the wi-fi connection and well its terrible, got into home and that was it really, the PS3 can't sustain the connection (logs out of PSN after about 10 minutes). I'm thinking of switching to a better provider, but because I'm in a rural enough area I don't think I have many choices. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I don't suppose there are any independant internet providers in your area? Landline BB doesn't exist where i live and i rely solely on a little white box on my roof which connects to another person house, which in turn to another persons house and so forth :P These sort of operations are popping up all over the country. I can get speeds of anywhere from 4mb to 20mb.

I have the same BB package as you have(for now:D) and have my PS3 connected through WiFi and i have never had problems with it. What are your speeds like with your Pc/Laptop? Run a check from your pc with www.speedtest.net or if you know how, ping the server yourself and see what results you get. I bet 90% of the BB users in your area are using eircom and the contention ratio is through the roof. Hence the reason why its so bad.
    Heres my results

After checking, i could only see 3 providers in Donegal, Eircom, Vodafone mobile and UPC. If UPC is available i would go for that but you might have to take their TV package aswell.

Try it with a wired connection, may be something in the way messing up the wifi. Better to check the other simple possibilities than going through the hassle of changing ISP. :)

Live in a bungalow, and the ps3 is 4 rooms away fro the (rubbish) eircom router, would investing in a better router solve my problem for now?

Is there any way to get the router nearer the PS3 to check? If there's a think wall in the way a stronger router probably won't make that big a difference.

All the walls are concrete walls if that helps (not plasterboard)

There is a phone line socket closer to my rom (two walls away) but I don't know if you can use it for broadband (its about 10-20 years old) (probably a thick statement too on my part).

The speed on my laptop decreases about 40-50% when I leave the room where the router is so it might help explain things.

Could well be the distance. It works fine through one wall in my house, someone I know had trouble in his place due to a chimney breast being in the way.
The phone socket should be useable for broadband once the modem is stuck into it. Try it there to see if it makes a difference. If the laptop works fine without dropping connection when you're in the room with the modem/router then it's not the broadband into the house that's the problem.

I've ever only run Dial Up through the connection closer to me, will this still work with broadband? (SOrry if that was a stupid question)

I can't see why it wouldn't, you should see the state of the two sockets I've used in my house. :P

Cool, thought you needed a different kind of connection at the wall to plug the ethernat cable into, to go to the router. Thanks man, i'l give that a shot when I get back.

Just make sure ya plug the modem into the wall socket with one of them filters on, I'm assuming eircom still send them out as standard.
