Shorting headphone cord

I have decent pair of headphones with great sound. The only problem is the length of the cord, its 11 1/2 ft. I always have to wrap it up in my pocket, very annoying. I was wondering could I cut what I don't want out, then twist the two loose end together. Would this result in a loss of quality? They're expensive headphones, so I don't wanna just take a chance to see if it might work. I need definitive answers before I go about any DIY.

    Don't do it!!
Apart from looking nasty, It may well affect quality as good connection is important.
If its oxygen free wire, it can be difficult to rejoin anyway.
Why not just coil up the excess wire and use a rubberband to keep it tidy?
