Hi was just wondering, is it possible to gain employment with being able to only teach one subject at 2nd level, maybe Geography?

Its possible but unlikely. There are currently no jobs at second level and the way it looks this is going to be the situtation for the forseable future. The more subjects you can offer the better you limited chances will be ...if you get my drift.

In any school I have worked in computers have been taught by anyone with an interest and a working knowledge, usually staff from the business department.
I don't think most people have a specific qualification because in theory to teach a subject it should make up a third or more of your degree and you must have it in your final year. In reality this is rarely the case.
So if you have any qualifications, special interests in computers put it down on your c.v. I would also advise anyone thinking of seondary teaching to gain a qualification in TEFL and possibly SPHE both of these can usually be organised through your college.
Principals love young teachers to be into sport and committe to lots of extra curricular activities ....so get training any training courses or qualifications you get now will really stand to you.

hi please dont think that i am critising, but with only one subject you really dont have much of a chance in the present climate. I am not an expert, but have put 3 girls through the system over the last 3 years, all can teach at least 3 subjects.
One is teaching in Switzerland, one is working on an educational book, the last just qualifying now has summer work in Switzerland with a view to a contract.
I think you should use the time to increase your qualifications or look outside the country.

I have to say I would be highly dubious about this advice. People can spend fortunes and a lot of time and effort on these ten-a-penny qualfications but at the end of the day people's jobs prospects will stand or fall on their degree subjects.

If haven't subjects which make you unemployable, your TEFL or SPHE qualification won't open the door.

You can do a part time course in St. Patrick's College Maynooth -
Higher Diploma in Theological Studies that allows you to teach
15 hours of religion a week.
I'm in the same boat as you. I can only teach geography at the moment but was thinking of doing this course after my PGDE year. (it's meant to be too much to take on at the same time.)
I'm hoping to take Irish as my second subject at UCD if allowed. going to book an appointment with UCD this week if I can.
