I downloaded a foreign language film with english subs. Is there any way this can be played with the subs on the PS3? I've done a few searches already and it seems that there is no way. Am I wrong? Thanks :)

You can do this in 2 ways.

First is to re-encode it with the subtitles directly on the video stream. If the original file you have is an mkv then the program mkv2vob will do this for you very easily. If it's anything else then use virtualdub.

Second way is to use PS3 Media Server on your pc and stream the movie to the ps3. The ps3 media server transcode the image with the subtitles for you on the fly.

You can download AVIAddXSubs from http://www.calcitapp.com/AVIAddXSubs.php what you do then is drag and drop the folder containing the 2 files (movie and subs) onto the shortcut you creae on your desktop, it then creates a new DivX file with the subtitles built into it.

You can then play it on your ps3, the what you do is press triangle and pick the subtitles.

It's the best piece of software I can recommend to anyone who wants to watch subtitled downloaded movies on the PS3.

I tried that software out. When I played the created file in VLC there was no subtitles. Didn't try it out on the PS3 though so maybe it just doesn't work in VLC.

Have you used it and gotten subtitles to show with the PS3?

Yeah, I use it all of the time now. The subtibles aren't embedded (they don't automatically appear on the screen) you have to choose them when the movie starts up (press triangle, then select subtitles ... it will say "other" on the screen.)

It just puts them into the same file as the movie, as the ps3 can't distinguish srt subtitle files by itself.

And can the PS3 play .divx files? Or should I rename it to .avi?

just leave the file as it is when you use the subtitle adder thingy. The ps3 will recognise the divx file.
