    Not sure of budget...
    Probably dawn and dusk timewise.

I want to get some nice photos of the local muntjacs to post on here but have no photographic experience.... apart from the camera on my mobile phone!!

Without a clear indication of budget it's impossible to advise, but if you're thinking hundreds rather than thousands you probably should be looking at one of the ultra zoom bridge models. Fuji have specialised in these and this is one of their top models or if thats too expensive look at this one .

You could also look at Panasonic or Olympus.

Budget = approx €400 if that's any help.

I'd go for the Fuji 100fs so, I think a DSLR would be overkill for you as well as more expensive for a twin lens kit, have a look at its review here.

I started off with a much inferior Fuji and thought it was a great camera.

The 100fs is a lovely bridge and at a good price too.
    €425 here or £357 here

Do I need a tripod (etc.) for long distance shots?

Monopod could never hurt, and they're quite cheap.

Some times it's better, but if the subject is moving then the important thing is a high shutter speed.

Get a camera first, worry about the other stuff later.
