I see he passed his initial test which is to soak the handler. :D :pac: Good dog. :):D
I also see Shep was in the hunt, almost beat him to it.;)
Pointers have the genes, they may be repressed but they are there. They were/are usually worked with retrievers in the Isles but on the continent are sometimes required to retrieve on land and water .... and track(Germany).

See if you can work him on a small pond and then a larger one etc.

The dogs grand but why dont you meet him at the waters edge to have him deliver to hand, then slowly work your way back so that the dog will eventually leave the water and come directly to you, without shaking himself and without dropping the dummy until he delivers the retrieve, this will be a great help when he retrieves a wounded but strong bird from the water who will promptly make off when he drops it..im not being critical but i always trained my dogs that way and found it makes for a more competent retrieve.:)

Well he wouldnt put a paw in the water a month or 2 ago & bringin him down with the collie, he learned there's nothin to fear so he's getting better with each trip. Your bang on though, I will be bringing him to the ponds next when I'm confident I wont be getting on the swimmin togs to get my dummy back! :D Small throws, then further & further...

Lot of duck & bodies of water in my neck of the woods so be nice if he was all rounder...

    Excellent tip FS243.
Not to get off subject.... but your tip reminds me of a young setter a cock pheasant and duck shoot. I have a pond on my land, it holds a few ducks mostly teal and one has to cross several fields to get there. In the past a corner held a reek of hay and at the time mostly nettles, the setter froze, I fumbled for a cartridge and threw it in the left barrel .... up gets the rooster, he is fast disappearing behind a tree, I fire, he drops, dogs runs over retrieves bird, drops it at my feet and rooster hi-tails it, a five minute chase ensues with the pheasant passing within 3 feet of me and burying himself under an old felled tree trunk, setter runs in and retrieves bird to hand, grudgingly.
She never dropped another bird at my feet.

Good point mate, any critisism is deemed constructive...
He seems to drop the dummys but the few birds he started to bring back at the end of the season were shall we say a bit more difficult for him to release. When theres feathers in his mouth he is not as inclined to drop it. Just a pity with his age & the timing of the seasons. I think the retrieve is engrained now, where it was hit & miss before.
I'll start to fine tune it now & get him to give to hand etc.

ill give you another tip i got which helps the dog to come to you directly and not circle you, pick a piece of high ground and stand on top of it, the dog will take the easiest route up to you which will be a straight line if you picked the right spot, this will enforce the habit of him making a beeline for you with the retrieve and looks polished in the trained dog;)

Few updates in larger body of water....

Get a few pointing videos in once the the birds are finished nesting...

Only taken on the phone but not bad quality...
